Right guys, need some advice from of you seasoned travellers on hotels.

I am off to shanghai in couple of months on business. Never been before. I need to get to Shanghai New Int’l Expo Centre for few days in a row so want to best way to go about choosing a hotel.

My criteria is:
5 star
Need to go the Shanghai New Int’l Expo Centre with ease
Ideally city centre location so i can go out in the evening, some sight seeing? or staying near the expo centre would be better?

Any advice would be great

Thanks in advnace

Stay in the world's tallest Hotel...

Drinking cocktails in the Cloud 9 bar on the 87th floor, when it's cloudy, is an etherial experience.

You're going to struggle. Everywhere in Chinese cities is tall, the rooms don't normally start until the 5th or 6th floors... I don't like heights either, my tip in China (and I'm there a lot), don't look out the window. Absolutely serious, that's what I do.

My worst experience was staying in a place where they were blasting a new metro line over the road. 28th floor shook like a leaf every 30 minutes, just like an earthquake. I spent two days there, then moved hotels and bought some new underpants.

Ah, that's OK then.

There comes a point when it's so high it wouldn't make any difference how much further down it is to the floor.... Comes about the 15th floor I think.

83rd floor would give me the heeby jeebies too, don't blame you a bit!

My experience of Shanghai is that most of the hotels are pretty much the same, with a different name above the door. Pick a 5* and it'll generally be great, albeit soul-less.

Going for the Pudong Shangri-La Shanghai which is on the same side of river as the Exhibition centre.

Only problem now is visa!, third party i use for my visa are now saying they might not be able process my visa as i am of Pakistani origin (regardless of if i was born in uk and lived here all my life). Little worrying but been 10+ times in the last 3 years and never had a problem in china.

Lets see what happens.

I can highly recommend the Longemont. It is about 10 mins taxi ride from downtown, about £2.50! But it is new, great trendy rooms, nice restaurants inc a good Italian and one of the best gym/leisure centres that I have ever been in. smile

It's awesome, I did a little video tour of the room I stayed in, checking out the decor and the bathroom, and finally turning the camera to face out of the full height window and looking DOWN on the 50-storey plus 'skyscrapers' dotted around the hotel.

What do you do if there's a fire? By the time you've made it down the stairs to the bottom not only will the fire be out, your daughter will be married and you'll be retired without even knowing.

My brother lives in SH so when I've visted I've never needed to stay in a hotel. We went for the famous 'brunch' at the Westin, which was great. Lovely hotel from the lobby and restaurant so I'm suspecting that the rooms are pretty good too. Central location as well.

Going over there myself in October, can't wait!

Regarding the fire thing, to be honest what goes through my head is 9/11. When the people at top had no choice but to jump.......................sends a shiver down my spine everytime i think about it. Hence i could not stay in a place like that,

Well, if you're on the top floor, the first 30 floors down are easy. Just don't land on the piano!
