Yesterday. mad

40Gb Fat version. Almost made it to 3yrs with no problems. Fortunately managed to get MW2 out by using the fan test method. Anybody fixed it themselves? I know there are plenty of tutorials on Youtube.

I managed to fix mine. Did this about 2 months ago without any problems.

Literally follow one of the tutorials on youtube and you can't go wrong. You will need a heatgun and some thermal paste. Probably took me about 90 minutes all in all and the majority of that was stripping it down. It's really not that difficult to put back together again.

Happened to me too, had to wait 8 weeks for them to returm my COD disk.
Bear in mind if you do try and fix it yourself and fail I'm pretty sure you wont qualify for the £150 replacement console where they take your old machine and replace it with a refurbed one, as the seal will be broke.

I have fixed mine, 5 times now. You can fix it, but it will not solve the problem (Sony didn't get it right with the first PS3's)

I looked at the replacement console when mine went, but upon learning that you get a returned model of your old spec with a warranty of only three months I decided to try fixing myself with a view of getting a new console should it not work.

Exactly why I've decided to fix it myself. Would rather put the repair money towards buying a new slim version (which is what I will be doing anyway), but I'd like to fix mine first so that I can try and clear any details stored on the Hard drive before I sell it. They still sell for approx £50 on ebay even with YLOD. Anyway, bought the heat gun on the weekend, and am now waiting for arctic silver thermal compound to arrive before I get stuck in.

Thanks for the input, gents!

Hi, first post, so be gentle.
My ps3 has just given a YLOD, with my MW2 disc stuck in it. After a look on you tube, i thought i would try a quick fix to get my disc out.
Pinched the wifes hairdryer and gave it a good blast for 10 minutes. After a few aborted attempts, i managed to eject my disc and start the ps3.
I have a original 60gb ps3, so the ylod was going to a happen eventually. Even a fix is only temporary, so have ordered a 250gb slim.
fingers crossed i can transfer the data accros before it goes pop again
