The landscapers have found a water table under an old pond in the garden, they are saying that laying lawn on this will cause the lawn to become soaked in the autumn winter months, is there any thing that can be done to remove the water table? Please help a gardening numty here please.

I think you mean THE water table. However, water being what it is, it will be level across the whole garden, so if you have lawn elsewhere, I don't see why you can't have it there too. It probably just means that drainage will be poor.

Yes THE water table would be pretty consistent assuming you have no rock outcrops or other interesting geology! It sounds like the pond has not been completely removed, just filled in, making a nice bog garden. Best solution is to dig out and remove.
