xbox 3 flashing red lights

had this xbox good few years and was repaired under warrenty when i first got it, basically is it buggered or anything i can do ? tried unpluging power supply and power unit seems ok anything else worth a shot?

Unfortunately fairly terminal. You can either send it off to microsoft for repair, try it yourself with an ebay repair kit or buy an arcade model and swap your hard drive over.

Its probably buggered really. You are best buying a new one. Could always try one of the many internet fixes I guess. Fortunately, mine hasn't had an RRoD death.....yet....

It's pretty much fked.

If you wrap it in a couple of towels and turn it on for 20 -25 minutes, then unwrap it and turn it off and then back on again it should work for a bit. Pain in the arse but worked for me for about 5 days till i got another when it happened to me.

Remove disc from tray, remove hard drive, wrap in thick towels (sealing off all the vents), turn on and leave it to shut itself down.

I've been having RRoD for a few months now (it's well out of warranty) and I've done the towel trick about 5-6 times successfully.

They extended the warranty to 3-years for any RROD problems, so worth double checking with MS to see if its still covered.

Alternatively if you just want a cheap replacement, GAME are currently doing pre-owned HDMI Arcades with a wireless controller and 12 months warranty for £69. Microsoft would charge about the same to repair yours if its out of warranty.

You could of course do what every chav and his mother does at this point - towel trick, then trade it in at Game. Take your points and go to a different store and buy a new one. Game don't test their stuff other than a brief "does it turn on".

I know this as I made the mistake of buying a second hand one from Game a few years ago. Three machines later I got a full refund and bought a brand new one from John Lewis.

If you're using the machine a lot and could do with an upgrade to wirless and a big HDD (250GB) - then the new version's out at less than £200. Or order it with Kinect if you like the sound of that - on it's own it's £130...!

If you're into taking it apart, then a heat gun maybe the friend you need to get the chip to 'resolder' itself in place. All risky but nothing to lose if it's out of warranty and a Game one is £70...

I repair them for a living for a well known retailer, definitely wouldn't recommend doing the towel trick, while it does solve the cause of the RROD, it can damage other components very severely or in the worst cases catch fire. The vast majority of fixes you read about aren't really advisable, most don't work and some that do will break further down the line without fail, even some major repair companies that will fix them for a rather hefty fee do a terrible job, I've seen them come back to us with live wires in them amongst many other issues.

Tbh, if it's still in the 3 year warranty I'd send it off to Microsoft, or sell it on ebay for around £20 and buy a new one with a warranty.

dont waste money on fix it kits, they work for a while, not for long
dont waste time with the towel, it works but not for long

just bite the bullet and buy a new one.

I tried every trick to fix mine, the one that worked was going down game and buying a new one. If it's out of 3 years warranty then save yourself the hassle and get a new one; the one with the 'jasper' board (do your homework on google) are reportedly reliable.

CeX can be OK but I've found they don't always honour their warranty.

Yes, but they don't test them properly at all. I had to go through the rigmarole of unpacking, setting up, pulling apart, repacking and returning 3 different consoles to the store. Absolute pile of arse.

You must've been unlucky, I'm not sure what the process is in the store and whether all consoles are tested before going out, but the ones that get sent in for repairs are serviced and tested to a very high standard... check in store to make sure it has one of our new seals on it (A silver seal with red 'if seal broken' etc on it).

The first pre-owned one I got from them was a shed and rroded after a few days, but I took it back to store and they swapped straight over no questions asked and let me keep the hard drive from the first console, no problems since then.
