Autocom System in a Car

Does anyone use an Autocom - or other comms system - in a car?

Thinking about getting one of these for use in the Elise so I can talk to the passenger without shouting when 'pressing on'. I gather you can plug an iPod/MP3 player in directly: anyone use this facility? Good points/ bad points sought.

I use an older one (pro 7?) in a Caterham. Excellent bit of kit. With phone connected, a UK estate agent called us and wasn't aware we were doing lots of miles an hour down a mountain pass in Switzerland ;-)

Stops you having to shout at a passenger, who is only inches from you, when travelling at speed. Also protects you from the windnoise when doing long distance at speed. I play a radio or MP3 player through mine - output from a Carmin sat nav too (although I've yet to get an isolated power supply to cure the audible rev counter casued by the Garmin).

Downside - the standard Peltor ear defenders they use crush your ears after a while - not enough room in them for the sound deadening foam, the speaker and your ear. I now have some deeper Petlor sets ready for me to swop stuff over.

I also use an Autocom in a Caterham. I have had some custom moulded ear pieces with a boom mike from Sensorcom. Brilliant pieces of kit.

I use a Starcom system in the Atom and find it pretty good but is very sensitive to the position of the microphone when installing the system so requires a bit of trial and error. Once you have this sorted it works very well at silly speeds.

Have had both autocom and Starcom (as well as a cheap Sparco system). Seem to remember Starcom being substantially cheaper and at least as good, if not better in terms of functionality. Autocom feels like a more quality piece of kit but I think if I needed one again, I'd go for the starcom option.
