after a local councillors son was seriously injured whilst on active duty

http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/8339492....

it made me think how many MP's have children actually in the armed forces and on active duty?

i remember reading a few years back that no american senator had a child in the us armed forces...

I don't know if any MPs have children serving but I don't think the comment about the US Senate is incorrect. John McCain is still a Senator and several of his sons are in the armed forces (at least one has done tours of Iraq).

How many are even old enough? The average age of an MP is 50 nowadays and as young professionals they were probably older on average when they had their first child. The figure in the House of Lords is likely higher though.

However, there are quite a few MPs who have served themselves as well as a couple who are still members of the Reserves and have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan while an MP. Unfortunately not many of them on the Labour benches and very few in recent governments (only a few peers IIRC).

Would it not be the case that the kids of well paid people are less likely to join the army anyway?

I remember some programme recently on Radio4. 4 or 5 had children actually there, another couple had kids in the services that may do in the future.

Nobody who really pulled the strings to get this war started has any family serving.

After all, war is rich old men defending, protecting or expanding their property by sending other people's children to die. Always has been, always will be.

1. a backbench MP is not paid that well;
2. joining the forces is and has been a career option for toffs and the middle class for centuries - this shows no sign of changing.

This is a very interesting subject, I do think maybe Blair's son could have joined & Blair keep his 4.9 million donation!!
William and Harry are in the "Armed forces" - seems to me that all they do is play around with expensive toys without enduring any of the hardships or risk to life that their ordinary officers have to face.

I don't think that TB children will be any different...

complete cr*p. harry served in helmand on daily patrols just like anyone else, the first 3 months in secret before a foreign website leaked it. don't know anything about william but andrew flew excocet decoy helicopters in the falklands. both were in direct line of fire which i suspect given how blithely you dissmiss their service you have never had the balls to do.

Well said! Andrew was also the pilot of one of the helicopters shown repeatedly flying into the smoke of a burning RFA in the Falklands to pull dying and injured Welsh guards out of the water after it was bombed.

I have no problem with that whatsoever. With all the money that is wasted in this country on all sorts of utter ste - and that includes in the Armed Forces - I can't even come close to considering that our future King landing a helicopter at his girlfriend's house is somehow 'wrong'.

Not that crap again when he was on a routine training mission and he landed somewhere if it wasn't his girlfriends back door it would be some poor farmers.

I'm sure i read someone getting their caterham 7 taken around the country on a jolly in a chinook during a training mission

Would you prefer they stopped all training missions and pilots ran around the carpark flapping their arms and making helicopter noises
