I've just sold my old car on eBay - a 1997 Mazda MX-5 which was in good nick, MOTd until the end of the year but no RFL, which was advertised for £2,000.

During the selling process, it amazed me how cheeky some people are. This was one of the emails I had from a guy in Leeds :

"i will buy your car but you must lower the price,,you need to bare in mind it only has 3 months moty so you need to consider the cost of this,,plus i will have to pay for tax so you need to you need to factor this cost in,,and also rememebr i will have to collect on a trailer so you need to bare this cost of my fuel and trailer in mind,,also it need some repairs and this will cost so you need to bare this in mind,,i will collect tomorrow"

another email I had "i will buy your car 1000 pounds take it or leave it"

The cheek of some people!

Now that the car is sold, I am debating whether to respond to these people with an equally cheeky reply or not... any suggested replies?

Now that it's sold, how about agreeing to they guys terms and arranging a time to pick up - both at the same time, at either a fictional address or the address of the local wierdo.

Might be fun - if you can be arsed.

You could just send an email to each giving the others email address as someone who has a good condition one for the amount they want to pay.

Let them hassle each other until they realise they are both buying! smile

Or just a short email, "If you want an mx-5 for £1000, look at ones listed at £1000. Mine was at £2000 and sold for £2000. Have a nice day!"

Or, common sense, just ignore them. But that's the boring option!

I wouldn't bother wasting your time or energy on them.

Just move on, you will always get chancers - I've had someone ask me to deliver a £30 coral to Brighton for them (a mere 4 hours drive each way for me and about £30 of fuel!)............

How about, "since it seems you are unable to spell I doubt you earn enough to run it even if you could scrounge £1000 off your mother"

+1

I would say inept rather than cheeky.

This was Ebay, so I'd say that kind of clunky haggling goes with the territory.

Having been both sides of a deal many times, I certainly expect some one to offer me a lot less than my asking price - the art is doing so with charm, so you don't insult anyone and reaching a mutually satisfying deal.

Say I didn't want a red one mate, and there is one near me that's a lot less money, hasn't got the glass rear window mind, if you'd get closer to that price and it's around £1000 I'd rather buy yours... etc.

When I worked in Antiques & related, last century, my boss worked on a 2 - 2.5 times mark up, depending on the VAT, say take a concrete, I mean reconstituted stone garden ornament... 2.5 times, so vat is covered, and you can knock 20% off easy and still be doubling your money.

If I go in with a cheeky deal on an ebay classified advert, after watching the interest on it for a few days, then I'll say something along the lines of:

"Hi there, just noticed your Mazda MX5 for sale.

It looks lovely, a credit to you.

I've just sold my Golf GTI to buy an MX5, and didn't quite get the money I was after so all I have is a maximum of £1500. If this is too low, then I'm sorry to have bothered you. But if you were to consider it then I have cash waiting, can offer a no hassle transaction and can drive away today assuming the car is as advertised.

Best regards"

Or something along those lines.

From experience, don't bother replying.

I sold a camper van on Ebay a while ago, got a cheeky question from some illiterate fool and replied politely explaining that I would not take £400 and I would let the auction run. I went on to say that should he bid, I would not negotiate on winning bidder price on collection as I had been honest with the listing and that I reserved the right to remove any bids he made if I considered them to be non-serious.

The winning bidder was an anonymous number id at the last minute and no contact through the resolution centre. Took two weeks to sort out before I could officially offer to the next highest bidder. A bit too much of a coincidence for me. Some people are just idiots and want to screw you over for no reason.

That's really good. I wouldn't even be offended by a well written (and not TXT SPK GR8 M8) question, and as you say it might work sometimes.

To the OP, if the buyer has left a bitter taste in your mouth, do you still have the V5? I hope you remembered to include the buyer's unusual middle name wink

And its not any different if you sell via classified. Get an unbelievable amount of calls from non local folks asking my "best price". Did you read the ad....then you know the price...

It's just that it's extra hassle in the first few days of ownership than it is with the V5C already in your name etc.

Such people don't even get dignified with a response when I am selling a car.

How do you expect them to drive it home? Not everyone has access to a trailer.

But you are insured and the V5 is in your name, so it's nice and easy for you to do it online whilst a fair bit of hassle for a new owner.

You can always negotiate on the price to account for it though....

Insure it and tax it locally to the collection point. It's what I've just done.

How does that work if the car is not in your name?

When I was selling my bmw I had a few Indian guys with terrible grasps of English phoning up to tell me my car was too expensive.

I would then ask them to make me an offer which they refused, saying I must tell them my bottom price

I'VE ALREADY TOLD YOU HOW MUCH I WANT FOR IT IN THE ADVERT, IF YOU DONT WANT TO PAY THAT YOU MAKE A FECKING OFFER! mad
