Pursue an apprenticeship or dive into real estate?

Hi all,
Just want some thoughts on my current situation.
I've been unemployed for 7 or 8 weeks, previously I worked as an apprentice to a "sketchy" building contractor in San Diego. I have been chasing an electrical apprenticeship for a while now but no one is hiring and the Union programs are chock full of applicants with little work.
So in the 7 weeks or so since I was fired I've been looking for places to live in Orange County (think more prosperous than San D) as her job is going really well and she can't handle the hour n half commute (each way).
I've finally found our next rental place, its large its almost ideal but during the feverish search I came to realize I still enjoy the property game. The market may be dead here with agents willing to sell body parts and first born to make a sale but I feel I can bring something a bit different to the party and make a success of it.
I plan to enroll in the local community college to take some real estate classes (a requirement to getting a broker's license) and attaining my basic "agent" license. My view is that worst case scenario we save a lot of money when we do finally buy a house as I can act as the realtor for my wife and I, saving approx 2.5% of the total purchase price. I may even setup my own company if things go well (requires 2 yrs verification of experience with a company and a "brokers" license)
I did the property game in the UK and fell (quite enjoyably) into construction as a result. However I feel like I need a challenge and want to pursue the electrical side of things as I really want to learn.
