Soon to be getting my next car, any opinions/advice?

Hey all,
So its come to that time in my life: I am no longer a tax dodging student, and after 4 years of University I am soon to be paying tax and earning a salary. I am currently driving a 1991 Mk2 Golf Driver which I absolutely love to bits (cost me £600 3 years ago and has never let me down, only 114k miles on the clock) however I think that it is time for me to get something more modern and functional that will fit in a little better at the carpark at work!
Here are my initial thoughts:
Clio 172/182
Mk4 Golf 1.8t / GT TDI
Ibiza FR (either 1.8t or the 1.9 TDI)
MG ZR 160+
Polo GTI 1.6 16v
As you can see, quite a range of thoughts I am having. I know the polo has gearbox issues, the MG has head gasket issues etc etc.... (do they not make cars reliable anymore?!?!). Has anyone here had any experience with a similar 'decision' or done any research into these cars and come up with some opinions of their own? I have been trawling the internet for a while now, and was just wondering if anyone on here had any useful information for me! I am going to be looking at spending about £4k, but this has room to move up a bit if the right car is there. I am open to any totally new suggestions also!

Yeah, I am pretty much set on a hatch back. I would consider something with a boot mind, not sure what though.
The clio's I have read are a lot of fun to drive, probably quite hard to find unmolested examples that havent been driven on the red line a lot I imagine? Being french the electrics are common faults i hear, and the gearboxes are weak. Again, i guess its just a case of shopping around for one in good condition and that has been well looked after
