Suggest a car.....

Hi all
Looking to move on from my current car (06 Civic Diesel) - its been great but rather dull so want to go back to petrol and a bit more power and noise.
Criteria must fit following:
- 5 door
- Comfortable ride, roomy boot (have 6 month old son and a nagging wife)
- Not too OTT image (i.e. scoobies, older Evo's)
- Cost under 10k
- Tax cost of under £250 a year
- Modern, so will ideally have air con etc
- Quickish car (ideally under 7 secs 0-60)
- Above 20mpg
To give you an idea of tastes previous cars include:
Subaru Blobeye STi PPP
VW Golf MK4 R32
Focus ST3
Integra DC5 Type-R
Accord Type-R
Civic Type-R
Not sure if id want to re-visit a previous car so will try to stay away from those options.
Ideas ive come up with so far inc:
Audi S4 B6 4.2V8 - brilliant car but shocking mpg, do about 10-12k a year so expensive option for living costs
Golf GTi - Great car but common, if one of these would like a Candy White one - also needs tinkering with standard setup to get it up to speed
Seat Leon Cupra (250ps) - may just come into budget but values dropping so wrong time to buy one?
Im open to suggestions!

BMW 330d with a remap... 
If you are doing that sort of mileage you probably want a fast diesel so the beemer, a Audi A4 3.0 TDi or Mercedes C320/350 CDi. If you are willing to live with higher fuel costs in return for buying a cheaper car then you could have a Mercedes C32 AMG or Audi S6 and spend the change on gojuice.

Plenty of room in the back, quick and the cheap insurance would cover the Tax of a newer car.

Thanks for input, i did look at the 330d but was hell bent on leaving the diesel. Audi S6 - never thought of them, will take a look
Merc C32 AMG - again a new idea, not that keen on Merc's generally but had a quick look and get a lot for the money. Shame that most seem to be auto
Should also state Manual gearbox is also a must have....

Spec wise it looks fully loaded, Climate Control, 6 Disc Multichanger and the like.
Perhaps not as sporty as you may have wanted though.

Just another thought, what about a BMW M5, your budget could get you a reasonable E39. Only problem is it barely averages 20mpg. If the M5 is too big then you could look at an M3 Evo saloon, well within budget and average about 25mpg, but they are rare as rocking horse s

M5 E39 would be nice but as mentioned shocking mpg and if it goes wrong....
The older M3's arent my cup of tea, love the e46 onwards but over budget and no 4 door unless you count the newer ones which are way over budget.

Yes that steering wheel was rather questionable! Definitely try and see one, they are really nice cars - I wouldn't mind one sat on my driveway. You might struggle to find one that has the all important manual gerbox though as most seem to be autos.I can vouch for the Accord being a good car, that 2.4 is surprisingly powerful!

Saab 9-5 yes, its Estate so its rather large! But it does 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, and has a road tax of £245. Quite a big bit of metal for the money!
BUT!

I do like the Saab's but would have to be saloon, maybe the 9-5 Aero 2.3T?
The Passat W8 would be a unique car, but estate and auto not for me. Good selection of choices though Rob! have opened up a few possibilities.

Skoda's - i do agree the VRS is a good car but maybe im a badge snob but dont fancy spending close to 10k on a skoda!
ST220 - did look at these, love the looks and the V6 engine but performance is very short of the mark for me. Quite unimpressive in comparison with other possibilities, which is a real shame.
