Hi all,

well I got the rack off the car, and its a modified Ford one, and its in OKish condition, but not ideal.

Thinking of dumping the PAS because the pump whines, its an engine bay eyesore, the rack is pretty heavy, and a couple of other minor reasons, like its a bloody sight easier to get a non-pas rack (i.e. something like Cortina IV or even Sierra? Depends on thread compatibility with TREs, length between balljoints etc...).

I run 225/50/15s all round in a s2 390SE.

Am I mad for removing the PAS?

it can be done, but is a lot of work. i have power steering on my car and ended up putting a different type of power rack on, this meant fabricating track control arms, pipe work, and the hardest bit was getting the rack to connect with the column, very difficult, but got there in the end.
i would recomend having your rack rebuilt, a lot less work.

Agreed.

A mate did it years ago and he has arms like a Gorilla now.

Just get a new pump.

If you have lots of time and money, and want have a tidier engine bay you could go electric,
If not just change the pump, its quite a common problem for them to whine, but an easy fix to put a new one on.

I am interested as I am considering ditching the hydraulic in favour of electric. The existing pipe work is quite torturous.

I assume a new rack. Which one? Variable control as well?

No,

I run my Griff 500 and Sagaris without p/s and it's so much better for it, do you use the car for driving or shopping?

It ain't that heavy without i run 225 R888 on the 500 and 255 F1s on the Sag,

My 390 has the same size tyres/wheels and no PS from new.

My biceps are only 16" maximum.

Carrie (Mrs Russ) has driven the car lots of times and she complains a bit but still manages.

Get rid and don't be a wuss.

In that thread Leigh mentions using a Corsa C.

I've just sold a C I purchased in favour of the more compact Corsa B column.

I will be having my stock rack refurbed before having the ePAS unit installed with controller.

All cheap off ePay.
