Any idea's on what I should buy?
Discussion
Hi Everyone,
I'm a regular reader of PH, and sometimes the forum and have now joined. Woo!!!
As of the beginning of September I will have a 10 mile commute to uni and back. I am only 21, so insurance is a big cost.
It must fit within the following criteria:
Under £5k
Insurance group 6 or below, preferably lower.
Good fuel economy (diesel?)
Well built
Safe
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should buy? Come on, imagine you are 21, what would you buy?
I was thinking about a Golf 1.9TDI

Save your cash for having fun at uni and for European tours....
Not sure on insurance group, for these - unlikely to be that low but happy to be wrong:
306 dturbo
Golf tdi is a good call
Lupo (not fun, but very economical... actually it is fun in the snow but hey...)
Volvo 850 / 960 / etc - can be cheaper to insure than you think
Or... left field and if you have some no claims behind you (classic insurance or similar via a specialist with owners club, etc)

- Saab 900 (as a classic)
- Golf Mk2
- BMW 3 series (e21)
- Landy (any) - just for the sheer PH of it
Have you got much NCB to use on your insurance?
I'm 20 and at uni, I had (and am soon to get another) e46 BMW 318i. Cost me £600 FC this year to insure.
Its something differant to all the standard student cars and quite impressive for our age. I could get about 40mpg on the motorway and about 35-40 on A roads.
Failing that, a golf is a good car.

TBH, you really only need a pushbike.
Then you can spend loads more money on beer and illicit substances. There will be some sap in your study group with a car so that they can ferry you to sainsburys etc.

I'm guessing the reason he needs a car is because he isn't staying in halls and has a 10 mile commute...Then you can spend loads more money on beer and illicit substances. There will be some sap in your study group with a car so that they can ferry you to sainsburys etc.

Good calls, but why the Landy?
You would be amazed how useful a Landy actually is. They are not the fastest of things but are great fun to drive and you can always tow your mates cars home when they break down or always get to were your going no matter what the weather.Cars parked at uni are risky - people would look at a nice car (eg BMW) and you may find it targetted. A battered looking landy (but sound mechanically) won't get a second glance.
Depending on your hobbies, it's very very versatile for hiking / walking etc
You will be very popular with your peers when it comes to end of term moving/removals
To keep maintenance costs down, you can learn to do most things on it with the aid of a Haynes manual, parts are readily available, and many owners groups to support them which will keep your cost of ownership low.
I'm guessing from your commute that you are going to be living at home? I know we are straying from the subject but for the cost of commuting, had you thought about saving the money so that you could live at uni in halls in one year?
Also, many unis discourage cars on campus and are increasingly either banning 1st yrs / 2nd yrs from bringing them on, or charging very high parking fees. This will only increase.
Dont go spending loads on a car when you are a student.
Just buy a cheap mk3 golf estate, ive seen several for under £500 with Tax an Test until next year. You can fit tonnes in the back, they are reasonable comfy and in GL spec have most of the toys like electric windows, central locking etc and they do 50+ MPG.

Indeed.. and 44 weeks in halls? Why so long? Most terms are only 9-10 weeks, means 30 weeks of bills?
Going to uni is 50% about the course, 50% about growing and developing with friends and all the other stuff that comes with uni.
Save your cash towards living costs, live at uni and have fun
