Drivers door wont open on e46 M3!!!

The door handle pulls out without any resistance at all and therefore no longer seems to be attached to the actual opening mechanism within the door. I'm having to reach in through the passenger to open it from the inside.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so would be grateful for your thoughts on whether I can fix it myself with aid of a mechanic/ordering necessary parts, rather than getting tucked up by BMW...

After bit of searching I found a great thread which not only gives me step by step instructions for a DIY fix but also contains a link to an invaluable OEM parts list and assembly instructions for every single aspect of the every BMW. Superb!
