Irish Catholic Terrorists, no new churches to be built then?

So the Catholics are something to do with IRA terrorism, does this mean no new Catholic churches being planned near IRA bomb sites as it would cause such offence like it does in NYC?

So. This Pope's visit.
Effectively it is now a state visit from the leader of a (past) terrorist organisation...being paid for by the taxpayer.
Acceptable?
So the Vatican supported the IRA?Effectively it is now a state visit from the leader of a (past) terrorist organisation...being paid for by the taxpayer.

Your sweeping statement? Not really, no. Please do explain how you came to the conclusion that this somehow makes the Pope the leader of a terrorist organisation. Effectively it is now a state visit from the leader of a (past) terrorist organisation...being paid for by the taxpayer.
Acceptable?

Not making any excuses for them either - just make sure that if you are going to critise an organisation, just make sure they are criticised for the things they REALLY did wrong rather than inferred or peripheral wrongs.
For many, many years, the Catholic Church in Ireland had running battles of words with Nationalists. How individual priests behaved was, of course, a separate matter. The Church were wrong, of course, to sweep such wrong doing under the carpet but that was almost a conditioned response for the organisation (as it is for many such organisations, not just the Catholic Church).
The RUC could never do right, if they had have prosecuted this priest the prods would have went mental and burned down as many churches and catholics as possible and from the reactions of people round me i would be expecting some trouble tonight. The IRA would have gained more support as it would have been seen as the evil RUC persecuting the church. I think they done the right thing and I hope people can see this, but moving him 30 or 40 miles from Claudy is a bit off, Cork or Wexford would be a bit better.
The Catholic church in the main part didnt support the IRA anf many have helped both communities and even members of the security forces but many priests did sympathise with the terrorists. Offering forgiveness and support for those that killed police or army, or in this case actually being involved in a bombing and more than a few moving arms and so on for the nationalists.

Don't be so stupid. One priest in one benighted outpost of the Church.Effectively it is now a state visit from the leader of a (past) terrorist organisation...being paid for by the taxpayer.

They have a lot to answer for in terms of rejecting condoms for Africa and protecting paedophile priests, but there has never been a hint of institutional support or tolerance for IRA terrorism.

The Vatican found itself ina very odd situation during WW2.
The Vatican itself was smack bang in the middle of one of the Axis powers for a start.
Secondly, Austria and Southern Germany were strong Catholic regions of Europe - not to0 mention some of the countries occupied or siding with Nazi Germany, such as Belgium, Poland, France, Croatia etc.
It was an odd situation to be in but I do agree, at the top level they failed to speak out strongly enough.
At lower levels, however, individual priests and nuns risked their lives to help dissenters within occupied Europe.
After all, wasn't it the nuns who helped Julie Andrews escape.
