Yes I rode this from abergavenny as part of the tour of the black mountains a few weeks ago, well worth doing but it does get tough towards the top and the descent the other side is fantastic (just watch out for wayward sheep!)
If you have a look for the tour of the black mountains website the routes will probably still be on there. I rode the 63 mile route which was pretty tough but rewarding.

Rode it on a 28lb mountain bike with 25lbs luggage on board going north to south last year. wasn't that hard actually, but some very nice views, a stop at the top for a pie (well, I am a scummy MTBer) and a really fast cruise down the other side. I foudn Rhiw Fawr harder coming south out of Machynlleth.
