October EVO issue - The ///M3 Special

As somewhat of a BMW fanboi, have to admit to especially enjoying this issue - the Patrick Snijers Manx article a particular highlight.

Can't help feeling slightly disappointed by the GTS judging by the tone of their feature. 110k is quite a lot just a touch too much. Perhaps what it does highlight is just how good the E46 CSL was/is (and even that was considered overpriced when first released).

I'm wondering, given the limited numbers of the GTS, will they actually by tracked (as the alleged intention of the car) or will they end up being garage queens?

Must admit, in the group shot with the other M3s, it's the CSL that stands out for me - just looks spot on, the body (arch flare perfect), the restyled boot, the gorgeous wheels, the stance. WANT NEED!

I thought it was a bit over the top, especially since they did an M3 article (including reviewing all the different types) a couple of years ago.

I was contacted by EVO via Pistonheads as they were after a E36 M3 GtII at short notice to use in this feature and they were checking if I still had mine.

How gutted was I that I'd sold mine a couple of years ago, it would have been unbelievable to get a car in EVO

Oh well.. I did offer them a Mondeo or a Wolseley but I'm still waiting for a call

I'll be buying a copy at lunch today then!

When people were slating Evo a few months ago, I thought they were being a bit harsh but I cancelled my subs a few months ago and I'm very glad I did. Had a flick through the last few issues in the shop and thought, what a load of rubbish. Very samey and imo poorly written compared to before.

+1. I was a subscriber for around five years and had had enough. I`m back to CAR at the moment. It`s pretty good presently.

I think the quality of EVO does waver from month to month but for me, even a bad month is a better read than most of the other magazines. Haven't read CAR for some time though, I must admit.

I agree, it does seem to be when they focus one one type of car. I don't have a problem with them doing it, it's just that when they do, they always seem to overdo it. There are only so many articles you can write about an M3, 911 or F1.

There don't seem to be any epic articles any more either. Just yawn inducing ones.

It's funny I'm kind of the opposite. I get bored with the seemingly never ending reviews of a revised Gallardo with a slightly different rear spoiler, or yet another last ever ever ever Pagani Zonda (we'll only make one of these, promise) Special Editions.

The big articles comparing some of the past matters with the current models (like the M3 article or 911 articles of the past) I love. It gives everything a perspective.

I know what you mean about the epic articles though. Two that stand out from the back issues are the Ferrari hypercars and 4x4 mega test that was in one of the first issues. Brilliant reads, both of them.

I agree. The problem is there are a finite number of cars that this can be done with and you can only do this every 5-6 years when the next generation appears otherwise it gets a bit tiresome.

I also fully agree that if I were a Pagani owner I would be a bit miffed at the number of final last ever ones being made. More special editions than a French supermini.

Evo is the only motoring magazine I bother to read now, simply because it's the best I reckon. I thought this month's issue is a good one, perhaps not the best in the last few months but still an excellent read. The McLaren F1 special was a truly geat issue, and for the claim they don't write epic articles anymore, I'd point towards the road racer special a few months back, and the accompanying videos (which are excellent) and suggest that "epic" is most certainly still on the menu.

The CSL is by far my favorite car before stepping into Italian supercar territory.

Regarding Evo in general, I've subscribed from day one and love it . However, if I had to be critical then I'm not sure that I completely trust their reviews of cars now that I've driven a number of cars that I've got reviews for in the magazine. They could also do with a bit more imagination in their features too; currently they seem to be split between historical features on great cars of the past and reviews of new cars. I always enjoyed one off imaginative features in magazines, like cars vs bike track tests (Evo did this years ago), 4WD vs 2WD (again, Evo did this years ago), driver aids vs no driver aids (Evo haven't done that yet), and things like that. The 911 vs Cayman feature was especially revealing, although very short sadly. Much of these sorts of things get stuffed to the back of the magazine now, which is a shame. The fact is that as a regular subsriber, I'm not always looking to change my car! I don't just want to read car reviews, and love these sorts of features.

Chris Harris is a fantastic car journalist though, and without doubt the best car journalist that I've ever read (and yes, I do rate him higher than Paul Frere or Setright). Having him writing for Evo is just fantastic.

On the whole though, a brilliant magazine and I'm rarely (if ever) dissapointed by an issue

Agreed. Although I honestly do feel that Viv's column rather lets the side down too often. I still have a bad taste in my mouth after his thinly veiled attack on 'new media' when DR first started (although I understand why, I just don't think it was very 'adult' ) and am regularly disappointed after reading the preceding columns when i have read his. Fine with his other stuff, I just think that perhaps they might rest his spot. This month I got as far as firing up the lappy to write to them about it but got sidetracked by PH and the moment was lost
