Its a 99 car.
Took it out in the Peaks last night for a little drive.
Being used to FWD it is beautifully balanced with direct steering. It revs freely to the red line (6k I think) and is fast enough for me. It seems to have a little surge after 4k up to 6k.
I didn't push it but it gripped well and was just a nice drive. Brakes seem strong but I wasn't leaning on them heavily.
When I had returned home and parked up I did have a little look back at it before opening the front door, sad I know.

Not really! I remember trading mine in for a Civic Type-R and being quite miserable at the prospect of not having it anymore. The same couldn't be said of the Civic, which was unceremoniously dumped at a Subaru dealer less than 18 months later without a backward glance!GreatGranny said:

definately M44, apparently the M42 is a bit revvier, the M44 being a bit of a torquier engine. However, I've never driven the M44, so can't compare, I've got the M42 in my E30 iS, they sound good when you open them up!Took it out in the Peaks last night for a little drive.

Not sad at all mate - infact i think its part of the PH terms and conditions for members 
I'm always driving past reflective windows and gawping at my own car, let alone a wee glance over the shoulder after parking

I used to do it with my Golf MK2 GTI but thought I would have grown out of it by now!
Just a quick question, the handbrake light and ABS light stay on when the handbrake is applied even with the ignition key removed. The ABS light goes out on start up and stays off when driving. Even having left it overnight like this the battery is still fine and its starts on first turn.
Is it just a wiring issue or dirty sensor?

Just a little update.
Been commuting from Lincolnshire to Shefield for the last 6 months and car has been totally reliable.
Could do with higher gearing though. 70mph is about 3300rpm!
May fit the higher final drive from the 323i/325i. Think it raises final drive 10%.
Averaging about 35/36mpg but I do drive pretty gently with the occasional thrash on the A17 to get past lorries.
Staying over in Sheffield 1/2 nights per week to break up the commute, thought I would camp in the Peaks as its nearly summer. Surprisingly I was on my own in the campsite.
Got a bit cold as well.
