My insurance is coming to an end within the next couple of months. I'm currently with an Insurance Broker but would feel more at ease if I was with an Insurance Company.

Can anyone recomend please?

Cheers

I agree, it's a bit of an odd arrangement I have at the moment, hence why I want to move away from it. It comes down to the fact that they gave me the cheapest quote when I was looking last year.

I'm driving an Alfa Romeo and I'm still a young driver so premiums are high. However, if anyone knows of a decent insurance company that is aimed at young drivers and/or specialist vehicles (as I have been told mine is), it would be great if you would let me know.

Have you compared meerkats and got a list of quotes?

Still don't understand what you mean by 'insured by a broker'. It's like buying a car from the Sun newspaper, as they printed the advert.

As I said, it's a bit odd.

If I ever need to make a claim, I am to contact the insurance broker and they'll deal directly with the company I am with. In theory it works fine but I would prefer to deal with a company directly rather than talk to a middle man which is essentialy what I am doing at the moment.

I've looked at comparison sites but was intrested to see if anyone knew of any other companies that could be worth a try.

I think I know what you mean. My gf was insured with Kwik-Fit, who were like a middleman, as the insurance was actually with Endsleigh (or someone or other).

I don't think 'broker' is the correct term though.

I think the op is looking for a direct insurer that does everything in house i.e. Has their own underwriters, claims dept etc.
Where say tesco insurance isn't you dont deal with tesco its rbs (i think not sure if it changed recently) and you have to deal with different people, as mentioned elephant and admiral are direct insurers op they dont deal with brokers so if your insured with them you only deal with them.
Only problem is if your car is a "specialist" car a broker may be your best option what car is it?.

It's an Alfe Romeo 147 Ducati Corse (1.9 Turbo Diesel, 170BHP) - apparently it's a high performance car...

The general concensus at the moment seems to be that a broker will offer me the cheapest premium and is probably the best bet if you ever need to make a claim. If this is the case, maybe I would be better off sticking with the broker I'm dealing with at present (Insurance Choice). Am I right in saying Adrian Flux is a 'broker'? What are people's opinions of them?

Try Bell. They are Admiral essentially but I found them to be the cheapest quote around by miles, as did my friends who are also around the age of 21.

Most everybody uses a broker for nearly every type of insurance. There are actually very few true underwriters.
This may be but underwriters are not insurers in the sense of Admiral etc.

The chain is Broker, Insurer, Underwriter. An unwriter guarantees that there will be money for an insurance company to pay out. If the insurer goes tits up then the underwriter is left to foot the bills. In Lloyds there are "Names" who are wealthy individuals (often well known celebs) who "invest" in this way by belonging to underwriting "partnerships" (don't think that is the proper term but brain in overload at work at the moment). A few years ago an insurer went bust and the Names had to cough up, which they didn't like and bleated that it wasn't fair and they were not told of the risks of loosing thier money (all together now........Aaaaaahhhh!).

Here endeth the lesson.

OP: an insurance broker acts as your agent in dealing with an insurance company. In return for this they receive commission/fees. Their expertise lies in knowing the business and in knowing the marker (insurance is a Market just like any other). You may get a better deal by going direct but bear one thing in mind: cheaper isn't always better.
