Guys i have been looking for the link/website where you can put in chassis numbers to find out exactly which model you have. I have just bought a wrx sti(97 r reg) no.289/555 got all the normal stuff roof hatch, embroided seats, alloy bonnets, red top. but the log book says its a LX? anyone got any idea what numbers I should have? ej20 ?????
Any help will be much appreciated

The 'applied model code' is probably the most relevant one, should be something like GC8C4DD, that will tell you most about the car. Roof hatch + embroidered seats means its most likely a Type-RA Ltd - does it also have short gearing, adjustable centre diff, and intercooler water spray?
There is a reasonable summary of chassis codes and associated engines/gearboxes here:

And a (partially completed) model code decoder here:

Thats excellent Ben, it all matchs up to a wrx sti v-limited ver3 Mod is gc8d4ed 61c don't quite see what the c was at the very end. I think the lx on the log book must be an error when they imported it? It doesn't hav the water spray or var diff control but it does have the lighter pannels bonnet etc. It does feel like a short shift but i am not 100%.
The main thing which attracted me to the car is it is completely standard don't think i found another one on the web with a standard air filter.
Was also amazed how quick the car is over the normal wrx the pull in 5th from 80 and above is awsome.
Anyway i am offically a sti owner, pleased to meet you all!

All the Sti Type-RAs had DCCD whereas the WRX-RA didn't (lower spec engine too) but theres often misunderstanding about the lightweight shell - AFAIK all turbo Imprezas got the alloy bonnet etc, that doesn't make it an RA. The RA loses extra weight through thinner glass, less soundproofing and who knows what else.
They did make a WRX-RA Ltd as well as STi Ltd and STi-RA V-ltd, but the WRX-RA won't have a redtop engine.

Yep i got totally confused too. all i know is when you put the number i got off the car above into that website it all comes out at one the man was selling, wrx sti v-limited , just trying to do some reserch on the history of the car really, i test drove another sti with a water spray but where the spray bottle was is different on the car i bought, will post pics about it because i was curious as to what it does. I thought i read somewhere that the water sprays aren't too much cop anyway, and some people had plumbed them into the windscreen washer jets as extra. They did make a WRX-RA Ltd as well as STi Ltd and STi-RA V-ltd, but the WRX-RA won't have a redtop engine.

There are no UK STi's with DCCD as std until 2005.

They didn't release a regular STi with DCCD until they got it working together with ABS in the Ver.8 STi - 2004 in Japan though I think. The only 2002 STi's to get DCCD were Spec-C (and even then it was still optional, 16" wheel package with DCCD or 17" with Brembos and ABS).

Without seeing pictures, it does sound to mr like a wrx-ra.
Version 3 Sti-ra, and type R would have had no abs, manual Dccd and a an intercooler water bottle where the abs manifold would sit.
I had one of the first jdm sti 2003's to be imported. That had auto-dccd that you could operate manually as well.
Alloy bonnets should not have been factory fit to standard wrx and euro spec classic impreza's. But, soo many sti parts have found there way onto cars, fitted by previous owners.
