How to trace a car's American history

I've got an Austin-Healey Sprite that was built for and sent off to the North American market. Since I'm in the process of rebuilding and restoring it ( see here), I would like to trace as much of it's past as is possible. I already now from the previous owner that I have no chance of tracing it in this country as it was never put back on the road, and it was a brought from a mate of my cousin type car before I got hold of it.

So is there an American DVLA who can supply me with anything useful, or am I barking up a long lost tree? Any inof is much appreciated!

I don't know if they can help, but their version of the DVLA is the DMV

It turns out that the DMV is a state by state affair. And I have no idea which state my car my have been in!

Does anyone know of any way of finding out?
