I want to get a service done on my new XJS soon and usually i'd just do it myself but i want to keep the book stamped up as it hasn't got any gaps since the old girl left the factory in 1995.

The current mileage is 132800 ish and the last service was August last year on 128700 ish. The book shows that the intervals are 10k so shall i just leave it or get it done even though it's only been I know it's only 4000 odd miles since the last one. Also the last owner did change the oil recently which is still golden.

I don't know if i'm being a bit keen but this is the first properly nice car with a stamped up book that i've owned. I guess i could just leave it till next August (which will be 2 years between services) and get it done then.

Thoughts?

Oh and my original question was re. pricing (got sidetracked) What will i be looking at cost wise for a routine 10k, as i guess it would be classed, service by a specialist indy or main dealer?

The book service intervals are normal 10K miles or 1 year.

I'd be nervous about taking an XJS to a main dealer unless I knew them well, it is quite possible they might not have seen one in the flesh before. I think you are more likely to find an XJS at a specialist. Of course I'd still want to know a bit about them and get recommendations.

10k or a year, gotcha, that makes sense. I'll look at getting it done then.#

There is a Jag specialist with a good reputation in my town, think i'll give him a bell.

I totally agree, there's been a lot of franchise changes in the last 5-10 years too, its entirely possible a current dealership may never have had a "old school" jag through the door ever.

Make sure they grease all the rear suspension points, especially the inner and outer fulcrums. It could be worth getting a grease gun and doing these yourself anyway, at 6 monthly intervals.

Who do you trust to do the job you or the garage. If you do it yourself you can spend a bit more on oil, new plugs etc and if its done inexcess of 120k does a service history really matter.

I've no qualms about doing the work myself, i'm capable of doing it but i want the stamp in the book to keep the s/h up to date.

Personally, if the oil hasnt broken down & she's running sweet, I would leave it until next year. Maybe consider doing it in March before next summer.

Then I would go to a specialist independant.

Everyone's different, but I would never miss an oil change for the sake of saving a few quid. My Mustang only did 250 miles between MOTs and I still changed the oil. Without chemical analysis you can never be sure about what has happened to it since it was put in the engine.

With regard to the original question, I would take the car to a recognised specialist. They are going to be better value, and most main dealers probably haven't seen an XJS for a while. If there isn't one within convenient range, then the main dealer would be worth a look though.

I certainly think it's worth continuing the history. It's something that would interest me if I was a potential buyer. It's true that there's no reason why someone can't do the work themselves to the same standard. It's also true they they could skimp on things or ignore warning signs of pending work. A stamp from a dealer which can be verified is worth something to most buyers.
