Hi,

Still smiles all round from the driving experience of my M3 (3.0) after 6 months of ownership, already craving more speed/power out of her though!

Thing is the CAT needs replacing on the centre section of the exhaust. I've been quoted well over a £1000 for a OEM CAT, looking on the web MILTEK & SUPERSPRINT do 100 cell cats from £750.

Has anyone had one?
Will it pass the emissions test on MOT?
Any noticeable gains made?

Where do i go from here, the rest of the system inc. manifold is all OEM stuff.

One other subject I'd like your thoughts on is this;
The M3(3.0) streering rack is meant to be inferior to the EVO's, can you directly upgrade this, or some say using a rack from a Z3 helps!

TIA for any feedback.

It's rare for the cats to have problems. Misdiagnosis is more common.
The sports cats should pass an MOT, if they didn't, there we be no point it getting one over a decat.

The evo rack is the same as the rest of the non M racks, so you can just swap to any e36 rack. The Z3 rack (usually from 4cyls) is a quickrack compared to the usual stuff, but they are pretty rare as everyone is after them.

Thanks, that sounds about right!
Also anyone have any recommendations on shock replacement over originals as one of the front shocks are leaking and need replacing so I thought I could upgrade and all four! Quoted £220 each for standard bilstein's.

I'm after better handling but don't particularly want to lower the car, and I don't want to spoil ride quality as it won't be used for track days just road which is full of pot holes where I live!

Also, has anyone experimented with the brakes on these cars, discs and pads need replacing. So far OEM floating discs seem the way fwd, any good pads for fast road (good bite from cold!)

CHEERS!

evo floating discs, good DOT fluid and some amazingly good value Performance Friction Z rated pads will keep you right.

As for shocks, £220 each is a fortune. For not much more, you might as well get a full Bilstein kit. It will lower it a little, but it's not all that much really.

220 quid per shock can't be right - have you tried Cotswold BMW parts? Can be excellent value for OE stuff. From your description it sounds like you want to keep it standard height/stiffness, and new standard shocks should feel good.

I'm on OE discs and pads and recent fluid (Evo) which I've found to be excellent, have heard very good things about performance friction pads too though.

ETA - If it does turn out to be a cat problem, I'd give a breaker a call and fit second hand.
