Decided to buy myself a nice watch for the first time in my life.

I am torn between these two Omegas:

Speemaster:

http://www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/d/2946785/om...

Planet Ocean:
http://www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/d/5269946/om...

I have seen lots of people raving about the PO so assume this is the preferred choice?

Also not sure how much of a pain it is to have a manual watch?

thanks for any help

Craig

There are a good few things to consider:

Size - the full size PO is a lot larger and heavier than the Speedmaster.

Look - PO has a number of different options (black bezel/orange bezel/orange numerals)

Chronograph - I assume you are looking at a std PO against a Speedmaster - do you like the look of the extra dials on the face of the Speedmaster or maybe even need a chronogrpah function?

Date - You can get a Speedmaster with a date but ou really should be looking at the moon watch so no date function. Is this something that you will miss?

"Glass" - PO has scratch resistant crystal, Speedmaster Hesalite (plastic) that will scuff up.

Manual/auto - I never thought this would be much of an issue, but I tend to rotate my watches quite a bit. I have worn my Speedmaster all week this week (which is unusual) and forgot to wind it so it stopped on Tuesday evening.

I don't envy you the decision. On a pracatical level and thinking with my head, if I had to keep just one of my watches, it should be PO. But, I love my Speedmaster although it will never get the same amount of wrist time.

Hi to the OP.

I have just today said 'yes' to the PO, and have ordered it through Dominic H here. FWIW, I think the moon one looks too fussy and cluttered. But this is all very subjective of course. I want to see the time, date and nothing else. I also found the strap on the moonwatch style had the smaller inner links that were a bit too shiny for my liking. I like that buffed down stainless no fuss look.

In any event both are very nice, and you decide smile

Good luck, it's hell isn't it? wink

Speedmaster without hesalite is way to go. I like the PO, but absolutely love the Speedy. Personal choice, but for me it was Speedy from Omega and Diver from Rolex!

Got a PO, have handled a Speedy.

They are completely different watches. The PO feels like it'd take a shotgun blast to the face and laugh it off. The Speedy looks like it'd happily time the shot in flight.

The PO, in its 45mm guise, on a steel bracelet, weighs half a pound. The bracelet is also not as adjustable as a strap, and lacks the fine adjustment of, say, a Rolex bracelet. That said, it's a very good bracelet and the clasp in particular is excellent.

The PO doesn't ride as high on the wrist as you'd think, and will slide under a cuff quite nicely.

If you're trying to decide, you must try them both on. In particular, you'll want to try on the PO on the bracelet, correctly sized. It's so heavy that if the bracelet has too much slop in it, the watch will move around a lot and be very uncomfortable.

Same problem here, bought both!

Totally different watches, I have my Speedy (original moon watch style hesolite crystal) on the bracelet it came with and keep it safe for special outings because it is just so nice and have the P.O. (orange bezel) on the black rubber strap with orange stitching for everyday (apart from work, mechanic) use.

Both stunning, both fantastic, if I HAD to sell one though it would be the P.O. the speedy has so much history.

As has already been said - both good watches.

If it was to be a true keeper, I'd go Speedy Pro as the PO is more likely to "date" in time.

Tried on the PO and Speedmaster at a local Omega agent and prefer the PO

Just met Dom (top bloke!) and he now has two PO orders...smile

I think you have chosen the right one.

The PO feels like it would survive a bomb blast and has to be the better option as a daily.

We need details though - what colour combo have you gone for?

Agreed - loved the "weight" of it

I went for the straight black one like Nick - I like it simple!

I see you've made a decision but for what it's worth I'd take the Speedmaster on a leather strap, unless you're a diver or James Bond wannabe I don't see the attraction of such oversized watches.

that was my concern but in 42mm the PO hardly looks any bigger to the Speedmaster

I've got the 45.5mm version and I don't think it's too big. The bezel takes up quite a lot of the diameter so it wears fairly small compared to some other pieces. Definitely worth trying them all on before pulling the trigger; I was planning on getting the smaller version but in the end the bigger one looked better.

All very exciting, and I am really looking forward to my smaller PO!
All stainless with the black face. Awesome.
Clearly a popular model. It seems to hit many good notes for the money.
Sincere thanks to Dom as he's sorting it for me. On its way from Switzerland as I type.

Diver - No but I guess a watch you don't have to think about is useful. If I wanted to dive, I'd use the G or the 1000m Oris (if it wasn't broken & I wasn't too lazy to get it fixed).

Size - Not everyone has little wrists. I have considered picking up a Rolex SD but TBH, it looks a little girly on me. On 8"+ wrists, a large PO looks about right. Anything smaller just veers into not quite right territory.

Bond - Well, just watching Casino Royale for the first time & know all about the Rolex hstory of Mr B, so don't fall into that hole. IMHO, the Omega is a nice & simple thing that probably looks good anywhere (the Bond ethos, I guess). 'Tis a good alternative to the Submariner/Seadweller if you don't fancy the Crown and can't find anything in the more obscure/interesting side of the world that takes your fancy and/or does the job (with a bit of work/effort/thought, Damasko or Sinn would probably be the closest, with a bias towards the former).
