Air filter location : Bulkhead or Intercooler ?
Discussion
Hi,
I was chatting with Pete @ Noble motorsport today and as part of their Noble tuning they move the airfilters to the bulkhead location a la 2.5 GTO. He cited the fact the engine is pulling in 250 litres of air a second at 6K rpm which doesnt leave much for the intercooler.
Just wandered what opinions are on this ? Adrian / Phil - your running big power, where are your filters ?

That is the worst possible position for them, they are massively affected (detrimentally) in that location as they are effectively pulling gallons of hot air in from the engine bay.
If you are going to fit them there, you will be well advised to completely shroud them from the engine bay. We have tried this while mapping one with bulkhead monted air filters a while ago, we made some shrouding just using carefully sculpted thick cardboard, the difference was substantial.
Mike.

Those side openings don't scoop up much air at all. Adrian and I have them in the usual place in front of the intercooler. Works well and the intake temps are fine there.Mike Tuckwood said:

I'm intrigued. What differences in intake temp are you witnessing, Mike/Phil? This could be a worthy 'mod' although I would miss the soundz....If you are going to fit them there, you will be well advised to completely shroud them from the engine bay. Power aside i think the sound is terrible with the ala 2.5 mounting position. Just my 2p worth
I would have to strongly disagree. Some of the sounds made by the air filters are truly 'out of this world' in my 2.5.Si
I guess I'd prefer lower charge temps to more noise. Points taken - thanks guys

I can't argue with any of thatIf you are going to fit them there, you will be well advised to completely shroud them from the engine bay. the best place would be, Front one by the fuel pump and rear next to the turbo with some heat shieldingajg31 said:

Your kidding me, thats the best noise ever. This noise is what makes me smile every time I drive it.If you want to go a little faster then loose some weight(not pointing fingers at anyone
) and keep the filters at the bulk head

dont think ive been in a car that sounds beter!
+1 on the sound for sure.
During my build of the Noble out here in the US, we measured air temps in both locations on two nobles and there wasn't any noticeable difference in ambient air temps. So I elected to mount to the bulk head and will heat shield them later this month for added benefit.

Interesting. I assume there's enough air flow by the pump because of the M400 side pod or do you think this would still be the case for cars without them?

i.e. directly mounted on the turbo? Or close to? Where do you mean by that exactly?5paulmv said:
sorry david not this time dont wanna get into bother again will have to photo latest mod at some point gonna fit a detatchable tow bar to take trailer tent to isle of man for the tt maybe just wondering iff anyone fitted one b4 or iff i will be the first??
Hi paul. You may want to look into the legality of that; I'm not entirely certain, but while I was researching some tacho and drivers reg's stuff recently, I'm sure I saw some legislation saying if the car is not plated by the manufacturer on the vin plate with permissable towing weights, that you can't tow with it or fit a tow bar at all?
