Hey guys, I've been away from MX5 land for a while and I've tried to not think about MX5's too much but a nice '5 has just came up for sale near me.. And I have the cash to buy, so I need a bit of advice.

It's a 1998 mk1 Classic mx5, 73k miles, UK car, FSH. It has some modifications, lowered, LSD, bucket seats, splitter.

He's looking about £2600 for it, does this sound expensive for this age of MX5?

I'm going to have a look at it maybe tomorrow or Saturday, but just want some advice on the price.. I'll probably be buying it while I have the money to keep it mainly garaged over the holidays. Not sure if I'm wise or not.

Seems fair to me, I've been looking for quite sometime, if the bodywork is in good condition then I think that is a good price. Try and knock him to £2400 haha

Sounds like a nice enough spec but personally I reckon it's a bit pricey and £2k is nearer the mark. It is difficult to recoup money spent on upgrades when time comes to sell.

The thing is though, all the mods done are ones that I wanted to do, and if I went out and bought a standard car and did all the mods it could easily be over £1000 on top of the car, if not more.

So I'm finding it hard to not run out and buy it.

The other thing, buying it to basically garage for most of the time until Christmas, am I crazy?

You wont. HTH drivingbiggrin

If its a minter, and you like it, and can afford it, then its 'worth it'. Only you can decide if that price is fair really.

That's the thing though, I'm moving to Liverpool in September, the car will be staying here but I'll probably be home every few weeks coming upto Christmas, so until January it'll spend most of it's time Garaged..

I have the cash now though, and I know come January I mightn't have it to spend.

That's how bad I want one!

What does HTH mean, i knew really knew..

"Happy to help" - usually ironically wink

£2600 sounds a touch steep to me - it's essentially the "this is how much it owes me" price, I'd bet. LSD is nice, nice seats are nice, and the '98 model is right at the end of the line. Lowish miles, and for a spotless unrusty example... up to you really.

They say prices fall in the winter, but having watched it last year it seems to be that people stop selling in the winter also - so the reduced supply balances out the reduced demand.

Or Heavy Transport Helicopter. Not sure that would come up too often on a car forum though...

Hi Connor,

All I will say on this is BUY IT! If it has the mods you want, you can afford it and you like the car there should be no contest really.

Garaging it while you are away from it is batter for it than leaving it on the street so just do it. If you don't, you will flutter the money away on nothing and regret it.

That's what I'm thinking, I know that if I have the money sitting about it could easily get pissed away between now and Christmas.

Whereas if I have a car to show for it, then if I even did sell it I could get (most of) my money back.

You could put it in a savings account with 90 days' notice, or give it to a parent to look after...?

If the car is good (no rust, or rust properly fixed), and you can afford it, then buy it now.

There are an awful lot of MX5s on the market, and 2.5k for a nice one is reasonable, there are plenty of people who will pay that and more during the summer. If it has been well looked after, it is worth it.

A mint very well cared for and sympathetically upgraded mk1 will go for north of 3k, it's all about condition for these cars now.

And the other poster is right - you WILL use it between now and xmas smile
