At what point do you realise you need a bigger car?

I was driving in Newcastle last week, and saw this...




Now before anyone starts to rant about me 'just not understanding' - I'm not against trailers, or adding a roof box to the family carrying barge for specific trips/ holidays.

But surely there must be a limit, and I couldn't help thinking this guy should have bought a Passat

Up until February this year, I played ice hockey and for a while I drove a Ka. I don't know if you've ever seen a hockey kit bag but I had to put the rear seats down to get it to fit. I would also happily drive along with my two hockey sticks nudging the centre console from between the front seats. Good times.

Needless to say, I had to get rid of the Ka.

No sure it makes much difference how big the car is, the kit you "need" to carry expands with the space available.

I passed a Volvo estate on the motorway yesterday that was loaded the same as the picture, with full length top-box and trailer plus it also had some bikes fastened to the rear of the car.

When you can't stretch your body in your car, you realise that you need a bigger one.

I'd like to know if anyone else on here thinks the exact opposite- at what point do you realise you need (or want) a smaller car?

Cars are getting so huge these days, whilst car park spaces are not changing in size ar all. So you get to the point where you realise that every time you park, you risk damage from concrete pillars, careless drivers' doors and so on. On a country lane or mountain pass, you have trouble squeezing past oncoming traffic.

Look back to when you grew up, and how big the car was then. I parked my 996 next to a 964 recently, and the older Porsche was dwarfed by my car. Likewise, compare the size of a Mk1 golf to a current VW polo...

So I'd like a smaller, lighter car (with the same amount of power, naturally). Although the appeal of a barge is strong to me, for everyday purposes, something small fits the bill. I kind of like that Polo with trailer and roof box- you can't shrink a huge estate car or SUV when it's just you popping to the shops for a loaf of bread...

I want to know what the spider was smoking that made the orange web over his trailer. There doesn't seem to be any method there.

Doesn't look like a heavy load so either the trailer and box are empty or he is transportation light but bulky items. Roof boxes and trailers are relatively cheap and can be sold on when he doesn't need it. Maybe he can't afford a Passat but has set up a business selling lightweight stuff like say Doughnuts?

I have just sold my Elise, was the IDEAL car. But, I have friends, and I love snowboarding. And I couldn't combine both. The Elise either took a passenger, or a snowboard and gear.

RX7 doesn't have those issues.

(just costs twice as much to get everywhere though)

To be fair though he may just be making the 1 trip like this in a year, the other 364 days, it's just himself.

In that case why not just rent a minivan? Cheaper than buying all those accessories.

Guilty...

Upgraded from my first stbox car to a Focus, and have since realised 90% of the time i'm in it on my own and the boot is all but empty.

On the other hand, 10% of the time it's so useful to have the space that it almost justifies buying it.

But yes, i should have gotten something smaller and faster.
