Help with car change decision

I have a V40 2004 1.8 Auto
this turns in around 36mpg
I am considering a Diesel car similar size as I may be having to travel to a different work place travel distance 78miles each way

the Volvo I have had for over a year it has been faultless in the main
new Tyres just fitted, serviced all its life.
I am looking at the Focus and similar sized cars, the journey will be A roads and Motorway the majority on the Motorway
I am trying to ascertain the point at which it will make sense to change the Volvo to increase the returned MPG to that of a diesel

The journey will be daily (weekdays) for approx 6months till the current House is Sold.

So will a Focus(similar sized)turn in enough MPG to make the swap worth while
in the time or are the 50mpg+ I read in the advert not really attainable.

Not easy a question. Why don't you want V40/1,9D? Same everything with more MPGs. I'm not sure about automatic gearbox. I've seen only "manual" cars with this engine.

Whats the budget? A newer V40 DRIVe may be right up your street. If not, you are going to struggle to hit quoted MPGs in most cars but a focus should do OK, as would a golf or an A3.

Older V40 1.9d is a Renault engine, make of that what you will!

You would get 55mpg+ in the equivalent diesel Volvo with the Ren-oh 1.9 in it.

If you can go smaller, a similar vintage Astra 1.7 will turn in 70mpg.

What kind of price are you talking?

Careful you dont spend more money changing than you will save in a sensible time.

Work out what you spend on fuel ad the moment, and what you will save moving to another (derv) car. Then take off the cost to change. I suspect there wont be much in it.

Thanks all I was looking around the 2.5-3k bracket for the Focus(replacement car)

Bora TDi.
Boring as hell but 55mpg all day long, it's a VW so it will probably be worth the same when you sell it. The Focus is the better car but the VW is probably closer to the S40 in terms of fit and finish- the interior on my 02 Focus is falling apart and it's only done 80k.
