Cheap insurance, fun- Not necessarily an MX5 what car

Evening all,
Some will recall my recent thread where I was toying with the idea of a Boxster S as my sole car. I've come to realise two things:
1. It'll be very tricky/impossible getting my bike in one
and
2. I badly, badly don't want to sell my A8. It's a keeper.
So basically, the budget has shrunk and I'm looking for something highly impractical as a second car. Possibly MX-5 (Sensible) but also love the idea of a kit car of some description. Budget up to 4k.
The major stumbling block is the "extra" insurance cost. Anyone have any bright ideas? I am 31 and live in the City Centre, but have access to underground parking I pay for so could garage the vehicle. 9yrs NCB on the A8, however don't appear to be able to use this on 2 cars!
Making, on a quick quote, insurance for an MX5 nearly £700/year!!
Come on then, 2 seater- Maximum fun, minimum insurance- Or alternatively some bright insurance ideas (Multicar?)

True, I could get a LOT of MX5 for the money- Although I think I'd only probably spend up to 2k on an MX5 suitable for my needs....
Trouble with insurance is that I seem to be roundly unpopular outside of Admibelephant- Don't know why as I'd regard myself as a decent risk- Most other companies including specialist brokers/Flux come up with stupidly high quotes for me.

I nearly went down the 'sensible family car' route earlier in the year, but ended up keeping my C36 and buying a lovely Mk1 MX5 for £2k. Insurance is a little over £200 on limited mileage and I'm loving it. I still feel a little guilty having three cars (for financial rather than eco reasons though) but this last fortnight in Northumberland has been fantastic in the 5
