Private number plates

I know these are not everyones 'thing'. I am in the market for one, would prefer a dateless plate, 3x3 or 2x3, but the prices being asked by the plethora of online plate traders is frankly ridiculous. I cannot believe they sell many. What also amazes me is the number of these places (newreg, carreg, the private plate company, etc etc) and eBay who attempt to sell plates that are freely available direct from the DVLA website for a signifcant premium. They clearly capitalise on consumer ignorance.

I have noticed a plate or two that I fancy coming up at the next DVLA auction, anyone ever bought via these auctions as a telephone or online bidder? Or where is the best place to pick up a reasonably priced plate?

PH have several 'plate traders. If the big companies think you may be interested they are likely to outbid you, then charge a premium.

I bought 3 number and 3 letters
Totally meaningless but look nice for under two hundred and fifty pounds transfered.
Just purely to remove the date from my car.

A meaningless 2x2 is something I've been looking out for, for when I have a bit of money saved but the cheapest I have seen is 2.5k

What type of plate are you after?

I am really after a dateless plate, ideally with my initials. I have seen one on eBay its a 4 number and 2 letter (my initials). It is on at £1595, the seller will take an offer but to be honest he will probably not take what I am prepared to pay.

I have also seen a good 2 number, 3 letter plate coming up for sale at the next DVLA auction 5-7 Oct. Reserve is 'only' £450 which would be about £650 with fees etc.

hmm, 4 numbers and 2 letters aint that great unless it's something like JP 1000

PG5030 £1900 the right way round

Note that PJG is really hard to find plates for - not many issued i don't think.

Still a bit expensive for me. The one at the DVLA auction is 33PGX, I would definately buy if I could get it at the reserve!

Just as an aside, I made more profit on the last plate I sold than it would cost to buy an E90 325i sport.

What I am saying is that how can I be an idiot when as an investment I could buy the car that you drive for cash from the profit I made on one? I don't think that makes private plates for idiots.

Yeah you may get that one at the reserve.

Just a tip - go to the auction in person. The dealers will be less likely to bid against you then.

Another idea is you could get PJ 6**

for example PJ 61 would be quite good

Thanks for that. There is no way I will get to the Auction, its too far and a weekday! I like the idea of PJ too, have seen 900YPJ on eBay at £750. May consider a cheeky offer, what do you think that is worth?

Do it over the phone? Phone bidding is pretty easy - my old boy bought a single digit 3 letter plate at the last one, got it below what he was happy to go to, and didnt have to leave his chair.

I would say go for 33 PGX at auction, even if you don't win the plate you'll still have a great experience, however you choose to bid it's a right buzz! IMO it's not going to fly over it's reserve due to containing an X. Nice plate is you can get it for under £1k

I think you are right, but now I have 'advertised' it I suspect it will triple its reserve.

Yeah with hindsight maybe you shouldn't have listed the reg but suppose you wanted to get opinions on it before deciding to go for it? It's worth noting that 11 PGX & 55 PGX sold for £750 + fees & £700 + fees respectively. In fact there's only one *** PGX plate gone through auction that's made over £1k and that's 5 PGX so I'd say you still stand a very good chance of getting it for over £1k.

When I'm bidding by phone I normally register for internet bidding as well and have the page open and ready - that way if one of the formats fails (eg. no mobile signal or internet crashes) then you're hedging your bets
