Sell.. Don't Sell.... Sell... No Don't Sell!

Right sorry about this my fellow PHers but I am in quite a predicament. One which I never thought would happen.

I have been trying to sell my Porsche Boxster S for the last few weeks and recently I have had a couple of calls about it. All serious buyers wanting to come this weekend to buy. This is fantastic, so I have prepped my car nicely for potential buyers to look at. Everything has been taken care of.

So today I have been out in it and everywhere I go all I can hear is people talking about my car. Okay, mostly these are from children who just can't get over it and shouting out "have you seen it! but have you seen it?!!!". Couldn't help feeling proud of myself opening the car and jumping in.

Now I'm not sure what to do. Its a lovely car, nothing wrong with it at all. The only reason for selling is that its an expensive car for me (cost over £22k) and I don't want to run it through Winter with all the problems that comes with.

Should I just stop my sentimental emotional crap and sell it while people are still interested, or should I hang on to it and sell it next summer (albeit a lower price). Nobody I know understands car fanatics so they just say "do what what you want" which is not helpful. Its a nice car but its just a car. People appreciate it but it hasn't changed my life but then again I'm still young enough to pull it off. It could be one of those things I don't understand now, but will later in life and may regret selling it after only 4 months of ownership. I think I'm about 70% to sell and 30% to keep right now. Any suggestions of people in similar situations in the past or present?

Depends what you'd be selling it for? Is it surplus to requirements or to make way for something tastier?

I would end up going for a pretty generic car - maybe a Volvo C70 D5 because I do like convertibles. The Boxster S was to be my last exuberant purchase, the one that I spent silly money on beacause I'm under 30 and have no real responsibility. Yet.

I'd like to think that if I was in your situation, I'd do anything in my power to keep it. If there was any conceivable way that I could afford to run it (and by that I don't mean on a shoestring) whilst still shouldering the responsibilities you mention, then I would. It's clear you love the car.

Ask yourself:

• Do I like the car?
• Do I enjoy driving it?
• Do I enjoy owning it?
• Do I need to sell it?

Should give you your answer!

If you love it, why don't you keep it? If you're worried about winter driving, declare it SORN, hide it in a garage/drive etc and get yourself a little shed to run about in come the Spring you can rejuvenate your pride and joy and either sell or hang up the shed.

I understand your predicament (I was in much the same way when I moved further from work and didn't want to run my Scoob there and back), so I got a shed. I then was able to drive the Impreza on the weekends, not worrying about undue stress on the engine/me, petrol prices, and other such things.

Winter problems happen on most cars. Not just Boxsters. Frozen locks, door seals and window regulators as well as defrosting cars is a problem we all face on a sub zero winter morning.

Really? I'm not looking forward to salt corrosion and frozen windows which won't drop for me to open the door. I would hate myself if I damaged this car in any way.

The first winter I had it, I ran my 996 C2 Cab as my only car the whole way through the winter using it every day (unless I was working out of the country) and never had any of the problems you allude to.......so IMO they shouldn't be an over-riding factor for the sale.

It's simple. If you have advertised to sell it then you don't really "Love" the car. If you did then it would never be up for sale and you would do everything to keep it (unless you need the cash). There is a thread running on £500 snotters that would get you through the winter and beyond.

Series 1 Elise will not fall much below £6k and the E39 will probably not hit £2.5k for a while.

So you have a more focused sports convertible and a more comfortable saloon.

+1 for this idea.

Much less depreciation and less worrys about driving an expensive sports car during the cold months.

Unless it snows then you have 2 RWD cars one of which is likely to be unusable due to the stupidly wide tyres it uses.

I'm struggling to beleive that people were getting all whipped up about the sight of a Boxster S. It's not exactly an exotic beast or a 'looker' in any way is it? Well engineered cars I grant you ( had a couple in my past) but are a little plain in the visual impact stakes.

Lets hope your potential buyers get just as excited when they turn up to view it then.

its still a newage porsche at the end of the day.

most people will see that kinda car as exotic.

Just sell it, its not like it's a rare car, if you change your mind you can always pick up another later on, there are plenty of them about.

I thought so too. But people really comment on it. Especially because its Yellow and its a new shape.
