Kia: your thoughts?

I looked at these a couple of years ago when picking a new car; the procee'd(?sp) looks pretty but the inside looks very dated and basic. I remember the diesel was relatively quick (in the way modern diesels are) but the petrol I took out was rubbish, slow, and unresponsive.
It just felt like a 90s car.

I had a Kia Soul on hire recently and whilst I was surprised at the general quality of the car the 1.6l lump was woeful. My normal steer is a V8 so I thought I might be being an arse but then the wife had a go and noted how crap it was compared to her old VAG 1.4 16V. It fust didn't like to rev.
Fine cars with cracking warranty deals but you'd be better off with a Focus if you like driving.

I suggest trying the Hyundai i30 - same car with better engines and less spine-breaking suspension.
My OH has an i30 1.4 Comfort. 108PS from the little chain-cam 1.4, disc brakes all round, handles well, and is quite comfortable. Lots of spec too, considering we paid £10,000 on the dot for it new.

I know its a bit sad but i wouldnt even consider one being a car nut, whenever i see a Hyundai, Kia or Ford Fusion i just want to pull them over and ask WHY!! Why not buy an Ex demonstrator focus, astra or even Skoda octavia, something that doesnt make you look like I DONT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN CARS. Whenever you see one there chugging away at 35mph either elderly or someone with the seat as high and as far forward as it will go with all the time in the world. I know a 5 year warranty is a very good thing but at quite a bit of expense in image.

The OH's i30 replaced a rotten '01 Almera. She'd managed 80k out of the factory fit brake pads on the Almera, and it'd still be going if I hadn't put my hand through the rear chassis when cleaning up brake pipes for MOT.She wanted another car that she could drive for 9-10 years without having to do anything. The i30 seemed to be the ticket considering the spec and the price.

My borther has been selling them for over a year now. Really quite impressed. So much so that it makes you wonder how companies like Ford and Vauxhall actually manage to sell anything.1.6 or 1.4 and why?

Personally quite like the Soul, it's funky, fun and different.
Diesels are better than petrols. All go quite well and seem well built, not true drivers cars, but on par with anything VAG IMO.
I am a car 'nut' though! but I thought it would be a cheap option long term for easy motoring.
I decided to go and see for myself
I travelled to the Kia dealer in Stockport for a look.
No Pro Ceeds, well no new ones, I could have a secondhand one though, even though I stated I wanted new..
Our erm, well fed sales executive (!) was a bit busy discussing his new mattress on the phone at first so we went to try and find one for ouselves, no luck and then our Jake Blues lookalike found us and told us there were none at all in the site, his mate then said there were two, they did not mention they were secondhand etc.
We were speedmarched to the cars, I asked why we were looking at used ones, at which point we were marched back to the showroom! after a bit of a mutter a brochure was supplied and we left in a bit of a daze!
So I have to say, after that experience we will not be buying a KIA.
Take note KIA, all the warranty in the world and the best deals are worthless if you have crap staff.

If handled well enough and it was fun being able to get close to the limit of traction and grip at normal road speeds compared to cars I've owned in recent years (perhaps there is a lesson for us all there).
Performance was modest so you had to make an effort with the revs to make progress.
It was also fairly low geared.
After a long weekend of mixed driving and 80mph cruising upon the motorway returned 30mpg which I felt was poor for the type of vehicle.
