Rivas - are they over-priced?

The SLX is the trim to go for. According to the Lada owners club:
"...This car sported slatted wheel trims, matt black window frames, rubber side mouldings and bumper trims...
...we measured a top speed on 87.5mph, and a 0-60 time of under 15 seconds..."
Good enough for most of us. I'd say...

Yes, they are over priced.Look at Fairey Boats, the Spearfish Miss Daisy is very good value and for sale, and there is a nice Huntsman 28 in Holland for 120k euros that is a cheap buy.

You could always look at importing a Chris-Craft or similar from the USA - they were what inspired Carlo Riva in the first place, plus, they're a hell of a lot cheaper!

There was a very nice Chris Craft launch at Henley Regata this year , the guy who owned it was not realy up to speed on 'old technology ' though. The thing sounded awful and would not accelerate under presure it also stank seriously of Petrol and it was a very hot day. We let him come alongside ( reluctantly beacuse of the vapours )and had look at the engine a straight 6 Chrysler I think and with Carbs , we pointed out that the Chokes were out ........what is a Choke ? he said , problem solved !

A 53 ft Dutch Barge built in 1910 , it was not going to blow up but we had a lot of wine and beer chilling on board that we did not want to get hot !! We have a mooring on the Regtta course for the week of the event .Rower

The picture above is not a Speedster. It's the bigger 25ft Launch. The Speedster is 19ft.
I've got a 2005 Chris Craft Speedster moored in the SoF (Port Grimaud). Squint and you can pretend it's a RIva Aquarama (same curved windscreen). It is a fantastic little boat in design, performance, and quality of construction. But I wouldn't buy it for the SoF again. The Speedster really excels at being a trailored inland lake speed boat for water skiing, wake boarding etc and is brilliant when the water is flat and calm. I've had it up to 55mph in mill pond conditions when it gets on the plane within a couple of seconds.
But you have to get up early in the morning in the SoF for those conditions. Most of the time the water is chopped up by both the wind and the gin palaces that churn up the water from their wake. The Speedster is just a little too short for the wave lengths trough to peak. You have to slow down considerably. Also, it has an inboard/outboard stern drive so is more expensive to maintain than an outboard. I'd recommend a 20'foot RIB (outboard engine) which would be cheaper to run and maintain. No scratches or dings when the idiot mooring next to you forgets to put his fenders out. The Speedster is about €3,000 a year for winterisation, storage, and servicing.
IMHO RIvas are not over-priced. Like Ferrari they cater for a niche market and hold their value. But a classic Riva Aquarama will be ruinous to buy and run. One scratch on that varnished wood hull and your holiday (and children's inheritance) will be ruined! The hull is laminated and If the boat hasn't been perfectly serviced and maintained the laminations can come apart.

Saw a very nice Swordsman moored up in Dartmouth last week , first one I have seen , do they have the same engines as the Huntsman , the boat is obviously a lot bigger ? Also saw a Huntsman at Salcombe ( I think although could have been Fowey ) it was moving away and I did not get the name.

The Swordsman in Dartmouth is probably Dr Syn, nice boat, nice owners.Rower
Some very underpowered Swordsman do have the 145 Perkins that was fitted in most of Huntsman, its a mixed bag now, some Perkins, lots of fords, a few yanmars and even the odd green one!

I'm half and half about selling. I love the boat to bits when we're out on it. But - it only gets used about 20 days a year!PM me and I'll give you details on how your friend can sea trial it!

I sold mine 2 years ago for that very reason! Thousands of £££££s to keep her in the marina doing nothing just does not compute!!!But when you're out there on the water having a blast in the summer your head is filled with thoughts such as "life's too short not to". and "well you can't take it with you", and "what else would I spend it on?".
