Hi all,

Did it happen, I've only just recently revisited the site and have noted that I missed out on Sunday's meet. Gutted!!!

I'm the dark blue Chim, you'll find me racing the bikes down the A30 from Hook to Basingstoke.

I was hoping to come along and pesture you all about your experiences with hunting engines? I've owed my car for 3 years and during the past 3 months have developed a hunting problem.

Unfortunatley I'm not one who's happy to throw the car at the TVR garage with every problem since I haven't all the money to throw about and also I'm not convinced with the work garages often do. Plus any excuse to get dirty and under the car is appreciated.

So far I have been told...

Speed sensor (Speedo works so I'm sure can't be this)
Stepper motor (replaced)
Some screw on the top of the engine near the throtle assembly, that needs adjusting (not brave enough to move yet)
Oxygen sensors £150 each!
Mixture
ECU

Any other ideas or experiences.

Any more detail? Does it hunt when stopped or when moving (ie dip the clutch at 50mph and see whether it does it). If it does it while moving and while stationary, then I think you can eliminate the speed sensor.

I had a problem with occasionally failing to maintain idle at all - dip the clutch and the engine would just die. Took it in to Joolz, and he cleaned the stepper motor, cleaned out the throttle butterfly, did something with the throttle pot. (dunno what). Hasn't done it since and is running a lot smoother.
I think he said that the throttle butterfly was quite gummed up (my words, not his).

I'd be surprised if the stepper motor thing actually needed replacing - I thought they just needed cleaning.

Ok, so here's the problem.

Start the engine from cold, it revs up high 2-2500 then drops down to 1000 as per normal. Although just recently it's continued reving at 2000 for a while.

I'm finding that it's hunting when......

I'm rolling....i.e. down a hill at 50mph with the clutch in. Between 800 and 2000. So in my mind that rules out speed sensor.

When I pull upto a junction and push the clutch in stationary. 800- 2000

It's also running away with it's self. i.e. I can be driving along at 40 in 4th take my foot off all pedals and the car will literally drive it's self at 2000 RPM maintaning approx 40mph.

If I drive around for a while and come to a stop, the car will idle between 700-800 right the way up to 2000-2500 RPM for a few minutes and eventually stall it's self.

I'm going to give your cleaning the Throttle pot idea a clean at the weekend, Thanks but any other ideas apprecited.

Looks like the Basingstoke meet was a good one, I only live around the corner from the pub, how disapointed an I.

I thought since she's a 94 replacing the stepper motor might not be a bad idea. And now that I think back when I went to remove it my superhuman strenght snapped off the bolt section and I was forced the tap the out on out with a hammer and punch. I very slow process.

Sounds like it might be the thottle position sensor, has it got wet lately?

Mmmmmmmm. Not in the last 12 months. But one year, the car showed off it's capibilities to morph. And it decided to become a fish pond in the two foot wells.

Had to replace a number or relays etc... and got a new roof from Blackpool since I lost the old one on the M3 going somewhat fast.

Please tell me, where's the trottle sensor located?

Opps, meant throttle. If you look the engine from the front you will see the plenum chamber on top of the engine. On the RHS of the chamber is the air intake from the air sensor (long pipe about 3inches in dia.) the throttle position sensor is on the plenum chamber body at front immediately after the pipe meets the plenum. It is about 1 inch in dia, is held on by two screws and has a couple of wires comming out of it

Yep playing with that this weekend. Also removing the large pipe going into the chamber and giving the throttle pot a clean inside. I'll let you know how I fair.

Although I have been thinking and if it was a case of a dirty throttle assembley or throttle pot. Would this cause the revs to remain high and not hunt up and down as they are?

Nope wasn't me.

According to your details, your car was rather expensive. £300K
