2001 subaru legacy 2.5, any good?

hi, i am still looking for a family/work car, does any one know how these stack up? they seem well equipped and good to look at, will it be reliable at over 100k miles or should i steer clear? i have lookes at focus 2.0 estates but they are a bit bland really and not as well specced although perhaps a sharper drive. i like the idea of awd for the winter months too. any ideas or experiences? thanks.

i hadone of these in cyprus for a year and nothing went wrong, it drove nice and the inside was actualy quite nice. i think it was the 'sport' pack or something so the wheels were of a nice design and the auto box was quite good too. would have one again but the mpg was not too good but the fuel over there wasn't too pricey at the time.
saw one on ebay going for pennies and thought long and hard about it but the fuel consumption was silly for around town etc.

i am thinking of a manual one, so a litte bit better on the mpg front, but i suppose still going to be a bit juicy. i am mre worried about reliability really.

expect IIRC 22-25, but really driving it hard didn't seem to make a great difference.

These things handle well, and ride well, a good drive overall.

Not sure about the previous generation, but my '04 Legacy Saloon 2.5 Auto is averaging 39mpg over the last 8.5K miles (asccording to the trip which from my calcs is about 2mpg out)........admittedly this is mostly motorway work but still pretty pleased with that.

Reliability has been good (only had mine 6 months /12K miles) so far, just needed a service when I bought it and brake pads........

Very comfortable, well specced and quite anonymous (in a good way)......

Really good cars - well-built, reliable, good handling etc. 25mpg around town and 30-35 open road is probably a fair expectation.

9.5K miles and still stubbornly sat on 39mpg.

About 80% of that driving is on the motorway and sat cruising along not in any hurry. I think my mix of town/motorway driving will chaneg shortly and will come down a fair bit......

I have been using my friends 06 plate which is ex police and has 140k on the clock and that is still going very strong despite it's no doubt very hard life. Just keep to the service schedules and you shouldn't see a problem.
