Discussion
I've a high mileage E39 520 se this morning dashboards lights up as normal other than the:
car diagram not lighting up it has a fault that i know of on one headlight
the self leveling warning light comes on and stays on
the indicator repeating lights are not functioning
and the steering wheel controls for the radio are not working
I've checked the fuses but joy anyone had the same problem.

This is one or both of these things:
1. Ignition switch is knackered - causes all sorts of electrical wierdness, mine suffered random bouts of knackered wipers, radio, odd dash lights and so forth.
2. Clock spring (that connects the steering wheel controls and airbag to the rest of the car) has failed - causes intermittent steering wheel controls and airbag light.
Both an easy fix - plenty of parts about, try Quarry Motors on eBay (or phone them). In total I think it cost me about £40 of parts plus a couple of hours to fix.
Note of caution - disconnect the battery and then WAIT FOR AN HOUR before fiddling with the steering wheel / airbag wiring.
