Anyone rent their property?
Discussion
We were considering renting out our house recently, because it had been for sale for so long without great interest. Overheard a conversation in Pets at Home today though that sum's up why I'm glad we didn't.
Youngish women, looking fairly respectable was buying a hamster play ball. She was busy telling the bloke behind the counter that it's for her rats - that previously she used to let them run about the house but doesn't now. The difference being she didn't mind them chewing up the carpet in her rented house, but now she own's her own place doesn't want them damaged. She just smiled and chuckled when saying "oh well it's different when something's your own isn't it?".
Was fighting back the desire to shout "NO!". I'd be well pissed off it that was my place rented out to someone like that!

To rent my place I was so thoroughly vetted I felt quite invaded
They spoke to: 2 dentists I work with, my accountant, current landlord, personal referee, then checked my credit reference.
I have to put down 2.5 months rent as a deposit and have to earn more than 30 months rent.
I think you just have to be quite picky who you let in.

I rent, and am a little selective about who I let in - helps to ensure the tenancy goes smoothly and helps to weed out those who might wreck the place - and currently I've got 2 long term tenants (one 3 years so far and the ohter coming up for 5 years) and both are on the whole great.....
You think thats bad... I know someone who rents out to a lady who has 30 cats living there! They're trying to evict her, but shes using loop holes to stay as long as she can. She has really wrecked the place. I think they should have been a little more careful when picking their tenant.
I rent my flat out - I just advertise by word of mouth to people I know who work in the city. The only problem I've had was a drink split on the living room carpet which wouldn't come out.
I always approach the situation as a two way relationship and have to get on with my tenants otherwise I don't select them. I look after them by making sure the flat is in tip top condition and ask that they look after the flat. It works for me.

You are lucky to be able to do that.I always approach the situation as a two way relationship and have to get on with my tenants otherwise I don't select them. I look after them by making sure the flat is in tip top condition and ask that they look after the flat. It works for me.
I live in Suffolk, and I have a flat in London. I am going to have to hand it over to the tender mercies of the letting agents to run the whole show as I live in Suffolk and I am unable to babysit it.

On the other side of the fence, I was a tenant for about 12 years and always treated the properties as if they were my own. Some of my landlords were brilliant, some were asshats.
Now I'm a landlord and I treat my tenants how I would expect to be treated if I was them and we get along fine.

ked me about on the section 18 notice for 7 weeks but paying on the day it went to court to evict (thus extending it by another week) until the section 21 kicked in. f
king citizens advice told him to do it too! never seen him since..which is probably a good thing as I wouldn't be able to post on here from gaol...
I've personally rented for the last 9 months, and lived in rented accommodation for the past 2 years. I've treated all the houses with more care than I'd give my own home, partially because I didn't want to give the landlords any excuse to dock my deposit, but also because I wouldn't treat someone else's property any worse than I'd treat my own. In fact in the apartment I moved out of 3 months ago, the inventory stated that the property was in better condition than when I'd moved in!
