E60 BMW 530d v Merc E320CDi ... Talk to me!

Ok i've been looking at getting a different car and I think I should maybe get my sensible head on.
So I've been looking at the 535d as I know they are tunable so can still have fun but they are a little out of my price bracket.
So I'm guessing next best thing would be a 530d, can these be tuned also? What sort of power/torque can be had out of these? Can they still be fun? Not cerbera fun obviously. But I probably should think of getting better MPG.
Another thing which is related as I like these also, what's the general opinion of a Merc E320CDi? Are these a V6 engine or straight?

E60 530d - Yes they can be chipped to about 260-270 Bhp. Std Bhp 231 / 370lb/ft torque. So I've been looking at the 535d as I know they are tunable so can still have fun but they are a little out of my price bracket.

Yes they are fun and yes they are fast. On wet roads, they can be very fun.
Go for an Auto. I average about 37mpg, driving normally - eg driving at normal traffic speeds but putting my foot down on clear roads. Also £200.00 per year tax.
It will never be fast like a cerbera, but pretty capable. If you can get away with the smaller car, an e90 330d might be for you - lighter, and quicker still.
No experience of a Merc 320CDi I'm afraid.

Are you after a 5 / E class for the size?
I was originally looking for an e46 330d, but the boot space was not good enough.
I went for the 5 because you can get 3 kids plus kiddie seats in the back comfortably, yet it still remains a drivers car.
Are you selling the Cerb? That would be a painful thing to have to do......

Got an '03 E320 CDI (straight 6 version) myself and it's a very good car. Plenty of poke and performance for day to day driving, very smooth and relaxed ride and it can hit 43 mpg on a motorway trip. I think they can be chipped easily up to 250 bhp but don't see the point as I've got the Tuscan for thrills and spills. 
I'd recommend one as long as it's got a full Merc history and all the gadgets and gizmos are working properly as they can be expensive and tricky to fix.

They were a straight 6 up to 2008 I think, then changed to the V6. The straight 6 is a lovely engine, will cover big mileages and you should get 40+ easily on a long motorway run.So I've been looking at the 535d as I know they are tunable so can still have fun but they are a little out of my price bracket.
