Hi peeps,, Tried locating No1 lead on dizzy by taken all the plugs out which all were sooted up and they are new.. Cylinder 1 was a little wet all the others were dry..Located TDC took off dizzy cap and used the one that rotor was pointing at as my No 1 lead.. 1.4.2.5.3.6 done.. started it and bang.. put it back how it was and it started first time.. I did clean the plugs and there was a slight improvement.. This would explain why it was progressivly getting worst.. Now.. Is the mixture too rich as indicated by the plugs or is it a regressed valve(hope not) also the mixture tamper proof cap is missing and the guy who had it before me might of turned it up as it was rough due to syrupy petrol...

Does the ford engine have hydraulic tappets? If not, you'll see a regressing valve seat because the tappet will be tight as a gnat's chuff.

Otherwise, get a gas analyser on the exhaust at warm idle, and tweak the mixture screw until it gives about 3-4% c.o. Probably need to llean it out a bit more to get thru MoT, but that'll get it idling. Then clean the plugs and let it idle for a good 30 minutes. Any plugs that are a different colour to the rest warrant further investigation into things like VSR. Also, if its VSR, it'll definitely misfire and you can isolate which cylinder is doing it by:

Put some thick rubber gloves on.
Get some pliers with insulated handles, and wrap some rag around them.
With the engine running, carefully pull each HT lead off in turn, and listen to the effect it has on the engine note.

When you pull the HT lead off the cylinder that is causing the misfire, the engine note wont change because that cylinder wasnt contributing any power anyway.

Once you know which cylinder(s) is (are) duffers, then you can think about spark testing, injector testing/cleaning, and if that doesnt work and you suspect VSR, head off, valve spring(s) off, valve out and inspect the seat. If the Cologne is a vertical valve head (i.e. not pent roof), you'll be able to hold a ruler across the cleaned head face and measure how far away the face of the valve head is with a vernier caliper or better still a dial gauge and mag stand. If the suspect cylinder has a valve sunken into the head more than the other cylnders, you have found the problem - VSR. Like I say, that aproach work unless its a pent-roof head.

Hi ed.. Thanks.. Did do that mate and they all made the engine denote, Which seems to be doing what it should.. Unfortuneately i do not posses a gas analyser, Cant remember at mo but someone was kind enough to help guide me through it without gas analyser... I think.. I was considering puttin it on the classified with all its probs and finsh me harley, combine the money and get a 350i wedge..(i know that they all have probs here and there) as ive seen some that are up and doing it.. look fantastic.. thousands spent.. for just over 3k.. Im begining to think i really did jump in at the deep end as im in no position to restore cars and have never wanted to as much as i love em.. I havent smiled for 5 weeks now and its ever since ive owned that particular car..
