Any one on here run a 7 derivitive, if so what rubber do you run? think I need to change from my cheapo set, keep finding the back end breaking away.
Have looked at R888's, but dont think they are for me as I dont plan any track days, just want something for the road that may inprove the road holding.

toyo t1-r's are recommended as a more road biased tyre although there is a new tyre halfway between 888 and t1-r but forgotten the name of it lol

nothing wrong with 888's for road use. they're also really good in the wet - its only standing water they have trouble with.
I reckon they're about the safest tyre you can get for a 600kg rwd powerful car...
I used to run Yoko's but 888's are miles better.

Could you elaborate on that please.

richard, i use Toyo R1R's, which is the relatively new tyre that sits between the 888 and the standard tr1. Really pleased with them. Whilst i've used 888's on the road i prefer the fact that there's a bit more tread for winter driving.

If you're going to plump for either A048 or 888, wait until after the winter. They perform much better without going through freezing temperatures (unless you've got central heating in your garage). As for choosing between the two, I think 50% is personal preference and the rest is down to the car and driving style.

I use the Yokohamas however, I've only tried the Toyos on a similar car so I will get a set next time to see if there is any difference. If you want a cheap all round tyre, the Yoko A539 is very well priced and quite good for a winter option. However, if you never/rarely use your car in the wet, you'd be compromising too much grip to go for anything other than the semi-slicks. Once you've decided, come back on here for several opinions on pressures!!

R888's are great on the road. Always used them on my Westy.

If you use 15' wheels I have a pair of 225 rears for sale that I bought wrongly. Brand new never fitted.

In my experience, yoko A048's go soft on track and also aren't as effective from cold as 888's - but thats a purely subjective point of view with no scientific backing. My arse is my test meter....!

I've just asked a similar question in another section and it seems like the R1R's are the way forward.

From what I've read/heard it sounds like R888's are the way to go. Whether you are intending on tracking it or not they seem to be best for 7's. And I guess most 7 kits aren't daily drives so fast wear isn't as much of a prob.

My Dad a d I have put a Paradas on our build in progress. But I can see them being replaced with R888's once worn out.

If it helps i recently bought a set of Federal RSR trackday tyres for my MNR Vortx for my trip to the Nurburgring, on track the grip levels were fantastic compared to the T1R's i was using before, as far as i know the R888 still has slightly more grip but the RSR's will be better in the wet and the cost was alot better, 195/45/15 £75 each which now iv used them think is a bargain.

Matt

Until it gets cold. 888's are great when it's warm and will tolerate a damp surface but once it gets cold they get hard quite quickly, more so than other regular tyres.

Try Kumho V70s in the winter.

888's here as well.

Had 205's on the rear for a while but found them too sticky to have fun with, so now run 185's all round.

I have to disagree with the 888's not working from cold. However mine are only a year or two old, maybe yours are older? I know that my old Yoko Ao32's went off after about 4 years...

I didn't say they didn't work from cold . . . I said that when it gets cold they don't work well, ie, in the winter.

They also need to be warm to handle any kind of power on a 7 type kit car with very little weight smile Maybe you have a heavy car or don't have much power wink

The important thing about a 500Kg car is that on the road you will not be able to actually work the tyres much; so a nice soft tyre will give more grip when cold.

As the car is light, wear rate is less of a problem.

Most rubber will getter harder in time and with exposure. So super soft tyres will harden up in four years, and the grip will decrease.

A tyre that is designed to give good road performance for a 1500Kg car will just be a hard old lump on a 7 type.
