156 GTA trip computer go awry

Since having the car serviced at an Alfa dealer a few weeks back, the trip computer in the centre dash is not reading right. The mileage, consumption, etc., seem to be way out. Alfa think I need a new speedo to resolve this, but I don't really want to swap it. Any idea why this has happened?
