Going through the 40mph Speed limit at Contraflow Roadworks on the M1 at speeds around 80-90 mph.......total and utter idiots and deserve all they get...........next!

Sadly, excuses like, "i wasnt doing any harm", or "Im late for a meeting", or "I didnt realise what speed i was doing".....FFS, that means that they didnt even see the roadworks!!!!!!

For the record, i was very polite but very firm.

Does it really require a 40mph limit? Would 50 or 60 be more apropriate? If so, then would 50 or 60 be better respected? When they make the limit too low there is that red mist effect. The sandalistlentilistthinkofthechildrenists are responsible for a lot of deaths, and your resultant rise in blood pressure. I agree 80 or 90 is too fast but what price we pay for bad road management.

It does require a 40 limit as there is only a few cones seperating the 'workforce' from vehicular traffic.
If people cant show respect for other peoples safety with the 40 limit for 2 miles then they are getting all they deserve.

I will meet a few more this afternoon no doubt!

As an aside, people cant/wont obey the 70 limit (within reason) and thats why we are kept so busy.

Fair enough.

Yes but the 70 limit is total bollocks set by sandalista so no one respects it and you are fighting a losing battle there. They might respect a higher limit like 120 in the dry and 90 in the wet though and if not then you could apply the same argument as above, mostly.

I think Tony is highlighting blatant disregard for everyting including speed limits.

As for the UK 70 limit, I'd like to see a higher standard of general driving first. But thats where plod on the road can hopefully make a distinction & use their discretion as opposed to robot policing.

I have no problems slowing down in roadworks for the safety of workers.

What upsets me is stretches of dual carriageway with cones on the hard shoulder and a corresponding 40mph where there are no workers present, like at 9am on a Sunday morning.

I presume there were workers present in this instance though?

Last week on the M1 near J12 it was taken down to one lane around 10pm, as has most of the road from J6 upwards over the last month or so. So there were some guys putting the cones out in lanes two and three, warning signs for a good mile beforehand, and a truck on the hard shoulder with the big strobe lights and arrows, but people were still leaving it until the last minute to slow down and pull over....

Crazy stuff, wouldn't get me out there working, i'm sure there must be quite a few accidents under those circumstances each year. Funnily enough though, it wasn't just the BMW drivers etc that were doing it. I was going through the neck of the bottle as such, where they were putting the cones out, and saw the workmen pointing behind me and then running - I looked behind me to see a damn great artic on the hard shoulder, obviously not having seen the signs, locking it's wheels up in an attempt not to hit anything and get through the gap...

Rather them than me, and as long as it's a sensible limit, ie there for no longer than it needs to be, then fair enough. I guess the difficuly with temporary works like that is that there is only a recommended speed as displayed on the matrices, which isn't enforcable (IIRC)

I used the M4 down from Newbury to Swindon for a year or so (back in 99) there was a temp speed limit of 50mph and a few cones along the central reservation, never saw a soul or any sign of works being done in all that time, and nobody took any notice of the speed limit.
Slightly off topic, had my first case of road rage yesterday when I overtook a complete numpty doing 25 in a NSL (60) lights flashing and the coffee sign (him not me) and the idiot decided to get out of his car when I had stopped at a junction, he asked me if I new the speed limit on this road "yes I said" 60, no it's 30! so I suggested he fecked off and read the highway code. Muppet.

Personally I always slow down for roadworks as back in my yoof there was a kid at my college who managed to kill three and himself by smashing his 250Gti into roadworks....

Anyway, what bugs me (and probably contributory to the problem with the people that Tonyrec has been stopping) is the number of INCORRECT signs and roadworks. I am pretty observant and its easy to spot the ones where it says "Slip Road" etc. But to have 50MPH signs up and warning of a lane out - without anything there and no one about is blattantly dangerous. It if were once or twice then fine, but its happening more and more as contractors just cant be bothered. Either they leave them out or they put them down too early. In the end you have a bunch of motorists who slow down and get into lane only to have NO roadworks, NO workmen and NO cones!!!!

Give me something to believe in please.... I slow down regardless, but there are plenty of people who now just dont trust them and blast through regardless....

Think I was told once that this had to do with a legal requirement that the temporary speed limit had to apply for the whole period ie 24/7 and not just while workers were there. Not all local authorities have the cash to employ a contractor to work throughout the night - overtime rates n that.

Well we know the limit on a motorway is 70mph. But is it realistic to attempt to enforce this (or even higher come to that)

On a motorway with light traffic how are the police contributing to road safety by keeping themselves busy in this way? ( we know its the law- but this is an aside!)

I travel 50K miles per year and ive seen more accidents and bad driving since all these camera money relief units came into being. It would appear that 50mph means drive at 40 and leave your brains behind.

Why dont the police stop the SLOW drivers who are in many instances the cause of accidents! and why is there is not the police presence when its foggy and torrential rain to 'enforce 'the limit then? but on a clear motorway and a nice sunny day!!!!

355 - agreed!
I do about 50k per year too and i dont recall ever seeing the police pointing their guns when its raining hard and actually dangerous to exceed the speed limit! Perhaps the yellow jackets aren't waterproof i dont know! It does tell a story though.

For anyone who was upset at the very slow renault 5 on the m4 westbound between 15 and 17 i apologise - there was an alfa 33 engine in the boot weighing it down

And if anyone sees a maroony/burgundy/red and white bay window camper that goes unreasonably quick, youll know where that engines gone

I thought that the laser speed guns could not be operated in heavy rain due to the scatter than the water droplets would introduce?

Thank you Tony for nailing a dick head that truly deserved it - as for is 40mph the right limit - yes -as I have seen cars go over the cones at that speed due to genral numptiness and the people who are working need more protection than a bit of string and plastic.

I was contemplating motorway limits earlier today. I believe the motorway limit should be increased substnatially but there should be a greater police presence. There would be a need for greter prosecution of careless driving or driving without due care, and a lower limit in foggy or wet conditions.

Most traffic cars must have video on them so prosecuting bad drivers should be relatively easy.

People could be charged for tailgating, staying in the outer lanes, lane dodging etc.

Oh and people should adhere to limits through roadworks, but it is very annoying when you slow for roadworks and nothing is happening!

The problem, as I see it, is that to nick people for offences like careless driving often requires a lot of paperwork. Witness our very own Will Crash (recent AutoCar correspondent) who pulled people over and after a talking to, recommended them for a driver improvement course - Each driver's paperwork would take 1.5 hours to complete.

It is easy to see why BiB dish our FPN's for speeding because the hassle of other offences means they will spend even less time out on the road.

Why can't some minor careless driving offences be handled by FPN? Or can they now as I remember changes were afoot?

Keep it safe!

Good on you Tony. Unfortunately we can't let Darwin's theory of evolution take effect on these people since they may also take someone else out with them when they go.

I personally think these kinds of speeds in roadworks should be dealt with via a dangerous driving penalty. (I mean roadworks which actually look like live roadworks, not like the M4 50mph ones with no work in sight described below).

I always slow for roadworks - amazing how all the cars you pass overtake you in the roadworks, then you have to overtake them all again later
