I'm sure this topic has been donw before but the search function is down and I can't find anything relevant on the Google search.

We're off to Rome tomorrow on our honeymoon. I did buy a guidebook and a good map a while back, but with all the wedding preparation I've had very little time to study it. So, any tips from PHers will be much appreciated - must do's, good restaurants, recommended bars etc.

Eats. Trastavera (sp?) area for food. Just pick one with a spare seat.

On a side note I did a bit of research and offal used to be big with the locals. So spied a restaurant in the center with offal listed on the menu, no tourists inside (cos offal was listed up the top I think) and the food was superb. I did not have the offal but reasoned it would be serving good food for the romans rather than trying to get the tourists in.

Steer clear of bars/restaurants in tourist spots - you'll pay considerably less in a side street.

Buy a 1L bottle of water - fill it up from the public fountains which can be found everywhere.

Set your alarm for half an hour before dawn and get out and walk the streets while they are deserted: then when traffic picks up stop for a cup of brown and then back to the hotel for a nap*

Take a private guide for a tour around St Peters. Don't bother with large group tours.
Splash the cash for dinner at "Baby" located in the Aldrovandi Palace Hotel. Simply awesome.

Get a Roma Pass which covers your metro and bus pass for three days. You also get free entry to some places, discounts in others and also get to jump the queue at the Colosseum.

Get the small (piccolo) 1.50 or 2 euro pots of ice-cream. You still get plenty and you don't feel so guilty when you have bought four in a day.

If you are not going to Pompeii and have a spare 1/2 day, then it's worth getting the train to Ostia Antica, which is only 1/2 hour away and is quite an interesting ancient ruined town, if you like that sort of thing.

When you are in Vatican city, dont leave the building and head down into the massive piazza unless you have definitely finished inside, because they won't let you back in!

get out of town and go to ostia antica, the playground of my youth!, to see extensive roman ruins of the old port of ancient rome. It feels like it was only recently lived in...

I spend quite a bit of time out in Rome and can recommend Campo de' Fiori.

It's a cracking little square with bars/restaurants all around and shouldn't cost more then ~€7 in a taxi from the centre of Rome (Via Nationale etc).

I'm thinking of booking a long weekend in Rome for our anniversary, what area should i be looking at? Seems like a big place with a lot to do. Thinking of 3 or 4 nights and budget of around £300 per head. Can you recommend somewhere decent to stay/

thanks

£600 for the pair of you?

I've just come back from Rome and stayed at a place just south of the Vatican and not far from Trastavere(sp) http://www.casasanpietro.blogspot.com/
Just £90 a night and a roomy apartment that's clean with a nice enough balcony area. Round the corner from a Market, cheap but food restaurant and plenty of cafe bars.
Down sides, if your tall >6ft then the bed might be a little short and the Market will have you up for 8pm so no chance of sleeping in (not that you'd want to).

I'd recommend it very much and for your budget I'd spend more on going out and buying expensive shoes for your wife.

I can't remember what the tour company was called but we used a tour company for a guided trip around the Vatican and it was well worth it. €45 each mind but I'd recommend it even at that price because you learn so much about what's actually in there. If it helps they start from just outside Footlocker here at 9.30am. The same company do trips around the Colosseum/Palatine as well for €20. If I find a leaflet then I'll update to say the name of the company. At least you'll now it's reputable!
