impreza rb5 turbocharger making a whistling noise!!:

as per the title, the turbo on my impreza is making quite a whistling noise, is this going to be a problem? what is the best way of dealing with it? if i have to replace it, what with? i dont want something massively laggy but i suppose a little more "go" is always welcome, but then i dont really fancy having to do lots of other things with it as the car is a totally standard "wr sport" model, except of course a remap to make it run safely if required. any help please? thanks

true, i will take it to my trusty mechanic but he is on holiday, always at the times when this sort of thing happens and my other car is due an m.o.t.... balls.

Are you getting any smoke on idle or when you rev it, or under load?

Might be worth getting a video/sound recording. Do you have a dump valve of any kind?

no smoke at all ever, and no dump valve, car is 100% standard with ppp.

When is it whistling? Under engine load, or on throttle lift-off?

Engine load = boost leak (probably)
Throttle lift-off = leak in boost recirculation system

it i when under load, i was just wondering if it could be the actual turbo making the noise.

Any difference in performance?

Might be worth checking the airfilter box. If the lid has come off or intake has come off then you would hear the turbo more.

Could be many things to be honest, might need some more info.

Big turbo time . Although fair play for keeping one standard, they are a rarity.

Sounds like you've got a split hose somewhere in your boost piping. Check where the jubilee clips connect as they can eat through rubber over time - the split could be under the clip so it might not be obvious.

thanks for all the replies, i will have to investigate leaking boost hoses etc, it doesnt seem down on power though.

Could be the hard plastic pipe that runs from the intercooler to the inlet manifold. Had the same on mine, got worse and worse while the part was on order ( Only a few dealers in Thailand!!) until I was getting beaten at the lights by Toyota Yaris'

Simpe fix though. Also the previous comment on the airbox lid is a possible, My cone filter makes the turbo much more noticable
