Advice needed on tyre tread depth difference-is it dangerous

I need some advice on an approved, used Mercedes I have just bought my wife. When I viewed the car, I noticed that the offside tyres were both at approx 3-4mm. rather strangely, both near side tyres were like new i.e. 7-8mm. I am not an expert, but I did raise a concern about how the car would react if e.g. it hit a lot of standing water.

The tyres are different on both axles i.e 275/40 rear and 255/40 on the rear, so cannot be swapped from back to front.

In your view, is this dangerous? The Mercedes guidelines are simply that each tyre must be more than 3mm.

It's commonly believed that keeping the same tyres and similar tread depth on an axle is the safest, with more tread at the back.

Are the tyres all the same size and make? I'm wondering if they refurbished the wheels and put the tyres back on the wrong place, hence the mixing?
