The CSL wheels and what looks to be bootlid look really good to me, can't wait to see the whole of the beast. Would love to know what the engine is.

Looks like a BMW 1 series. Nothing wrong with that, but hardly a special looking thing. Original M Coupe was much more exciting. This is just a regular car with a mild body kit.

Now if it drives well I'm sure it will be fantastic, but the sheer gaul of BMW to reveal this like it's something fabulous new and interesting to look at, is well, more gaulling than being stabbed in the gaul bladder by Asterix, while sitting in a Citroen SM parked under the Arc de Triomphe while smoking a gauloise in a stripey top with a string of onions round your neck listening to Je t'aime by Serge Gainsbourg.

Shame. Really wanted to be impressed.

I'm not sure that bootlid looks much different to a normal 1 coupe

Does sound NA to me, as to the bootlid, it looks slightly bigger than standard to me ? Might be standard/might be a slight CSL lookalike.

I expect to see a few mag articles with a 2002 turbo for old/new contrast.
The bigger m cars are going turbo over the next iteration as well IIRC

You mean a hatch? No way.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the huge flared rear wheel arches might look a bit... pony when the entire car can be seen.

Yeah, I think it will look much better, I don't think either is an oil painting, but at least the hatch is more useful, and with a decent roof spoiler could look like a ripping hot hatch:
