Haaving been recovered on a low loader last week with an overheating issue, I got the car back last Thurs. Issue was apparently a split coolant hose, and another leak, subsequently replaced and problem solved.

Fast forward to this week, there has been a grumbling sound coming from the PAS pump area, and I have felt it pulsing when on lock at slow speeds for a little while. The steering has now gone very very heavy, and I just poked my head underneath to find blue liquid pouring out (PAS fluid?) from round the pump area......

Brilliant!

Could it be anything else, I am thinking it sounds like it has just given up the ghost, but the fluid pouring out is a bit ? Or is this natural when something fails inside the pump, ie bearings or summat?

Its a Eunos MK1 btw. on a G plate.

Thanks

Blue liquid is coolant, PAS fluid is pink if its fresh and black if its not.

Well, I did think that, but its odd that blue fluid is coming out, and the power steering has packed up.....

Coolant isn't always blue - my Eunos has always had green coolant in it, and my Honda has bright pink coolant.

You can soon check, just pull the rad cap off (when it's cold) and see what colour the liquid is - if it matches what's on the driveway then it might be leaking somewhere else.

Ok let me rephrase that.

PAS fluid is NOT blue.

My PS pipes rotted through from the inside on the metal parts of the pipe.
Had to replace both the high pressure and return pipes to/from the pump.
This was about 3 yrs ago, so about 11 yrs old at the time. (Car , not me redface )
Not a particularly difficult job , unless its obscured by your supercharger smile

The diffcult part is the price the dealer charged for the parts, although I think MX5parts may have them now.

unless they put the wrong stuff in...
correct fluid is dexron III ATF, which is definitely red.

On the subject of colour, my mk1 Eunos seems to have some sort of LSD and the fluid in the diff is bright opaque purple - any idea what that is?

Jono, sounds like the leak from the PAS pump area is possibly water pump, unlikely to be power steering as the fluid is usually red and more 'oily' than 'watery'(as stated above).
If the fluid leak has got on the belt, it may not be driving the power steering pump enough and thus your steering feels heavy, bring it over if you want me to take a look... wink
