Loss of Acceleration

About to join the M80 after visiting the services in my 6 month old Cerbera, going along the dual lane slip road, in the outside lane accelerating around 5000 RPM in third when clank! Car in front, car behind (further back),and car slightly behind and inside as I have just passed him. No acceleration!! Dip pedal nothing. Managed to squeeze onto hard shoulder, just. Bloody hard when no power and surrounded by cars. Thought cable snap, as similar happened in golf. 2 AA men, half an hour - some retaining PIN where cable meets engine had snapped. Is this common, or did I happen to suffer a TVRism.
