Im trying to get a tasmin started

the car has not been started for a while on the first attempt the fuel pump wasnt working so i changed it.

I also noticed that the ht leads were sparking off the block so i also changed them and the plugs

now it still wont start does anybody have any ideas .

Questions

The new fuel pump i bought has a non return valve on it but as it is a male fitting i have left it out do you need this .

The fuel is getting to the spark plugs and there is a spark, if you turn the enigne over it backfires then doent fire atall untill you have taken all the plugs out and wizzed all the fuel out.

Are you getting the fuel to return to the tank? Pull your return line and turn the starter with a little help. Sounds as if you're having issues with the fuel meter to me. Did you own the car last it ran? Possible you have a wire croseed?

Hi mate..aint red by any chance is it..I got a 280i that has an issue with running.. Check your coil connections, The live and neg fittings for breaks or corrosion..did you put the leads on the dizzy in the right order(put a pic up if so,might help me out)..Timing..Backfire? exhaust or airbox? both? check the dizzy cap for cracks, moisture, corrosion, check rotor arm.. spring if fitted.. check vaccum pipe from carb to diaphram.. check the fuel distributor cover(the big air dome) for splits or holes..check air connectors..relays ok.. air filter.. Have you replaced the fuel filter at all as if it sits youll end up with syrup instead of fuel.. Just like me.. If theres rust inside it it can block your injectors.. Hope its something simple..I think it would be easier owning a plane.. Fuel..check..lights..check..ignition..check.. ..check..air temp..check..wind direction.. check.. clearance.. and green for go..good luck..zig

P.S Does anyone know the gauge of clamped hose on power steering pump, not the fixed head one..the DIY bit..well leaky..Ta.

Sounds like fuel.. The guy i bought mine off had it sat for ages and all the fluids start to degrade.. Oil,Petrol,Grease,Lube..Then hoses start failing,I had to change my fuel filter (syrupy gue came out)but i think previous owner run it and put muck in the jets..If you are changing the filter make sure you get new banjo copper washers,,softer the better.. if they are too hard you will have to kneal them (heat em up) before you fit em..

Agreed, get rid of the petrol and put some new stuff in. Be aware that the pre-85 engines won't run forever on unleaded.

Whip the air filter off, poke your hand in and lift the airflow meter flap...it should move smoothly with a small amount of resistance, then drop quickly back to its rest state. If it doesn't drop, or it's already stuck in the lifted state, it'll be overfuelling like a b1tch.

It does require a non return valve. (to maintain pressure)
To save buying another pump replace valve and buy a female/female fitting.
Or a male/male if I've got it the wrong way roundsmile
