cooper works problems

A friend of mine has a 55plate (I think) cooper works. He has serious problems, from other friends surveys it is thought to be the crank shell bearings, (apologise if I have got the term wrong as I'm not very mechanically clued up myself).

Was wondering if anyone else has worked on a mini with this problem or owned one themselves? And how much they paid/charged for the work needed?
