Insurance comapnies, driving other cars
Discussion
Does anybody know of any insurance companies which allow young drivers to drive other cars? On my current policy it says that I am allowed to drive other cars provided I am:
1) 25 or over
2) Have the owner's permission to borrow the car
and
3)The car borrowed must be insured on a policy of its own,
Only problem is I'm 19...
So does anybody know of companies where can be young and drive other cars?
1) 25 or over
2) Have the owner's permission to borrow the car
and
3)The car borrowed must be insured on a policy of its own,
Only problem is I'm 19...
So does anybody know of companies where can be young and drive other cars?

1) can vary between 21-25 but I'm not aware of any companies who offer DOC for 19 year olds1) 25 or over

3) Not all companies / policies require this. However, if the car is not insured on it's own policy, it is only insured under DOC while the driver is in charge of the vehicle. Leave it unattended in any public place and it's uninsured. So effectively you can only drive it from private land to private land.

Stu R, Thanks for the help. I'll recommend you to people needing advice in the future.
What exactly are you expecting? Someone in the know to come along and reel off a huge list of companies who openly advertise the fact they cover what is the most at risk age group on other cars? You can get your arse in your hands about it all you like but sorry, you've got no chance at 19. It's just that simple. At 21 you might have a chance, but at 19 I'd be amazed if you can find someone that stupid.
It's an open invitation for idiots to take a policy out on a 1.1 fiesta to cover them on 'daddy's' Impreza and all sorts of other abuse - and yet another way for another sector of the industry that doesn't make profit to haemorrhage yet more money.

Quinn Direct used to be one of the few that allowed younger drivers to drive any car. They went bust. Take of that what you will.
AFAIK they're OK now and are offering insurance. My first policy with them (i was 17) didn't let me drive other cars. I then renewed at 18 and I was allowed. It may be that 18 is the minimum age with Quinn, or it may have been some other reason for changing. All I know is it is possible with Quinn.
I am not aware of any companies other than Quinn (and you have to have one year clean with them as well I think) and Chubb Masterpiece, who allow any family member to drive any vehicle from a family fleet fully comprehensive at 17 onwards. When I had this policy it cost me £3000 a year though and had a MONSTER excess when a young person was driving anything interesting (Porsche, Maser etc)

Quinn say they do offer DOC on there policies but you have to request it and they may not allow it in all cases. Plus DOC is subject to many terms and conditions, see:

Question is, why does the OP need to drive other cars......
If it is your parents' cars it is easier to get them to add you to their policy but i suspect they dont want the additional charge.
As far as i am aware it is 21 or 25 with most mainstream companies and only available if you have fully comprehensive insurance.

They went bust, then came back, but no-longer offer the DOC service. They had already removed the DOC for renewing customers well before they went under.
Let me explain why I want this. I currently own a car, am the registered keeper and have a policy in my own name. However me and my father have currently bought a 2nd car, a 1993 rover mini. The mini will only be used as a 2nd car and will be driven roughly 2-3000 miles a year. To have a another policy on this car is just too expensive for me. It is not expensive for my dad but it is for me and him.
Does anybody have any solutions?

Ask about insurance before you buy a car?Does anybody have any solutions?
Seriosuly though, try a classic policy on the Mini. It might be cheap as you both have a main car and this is a toy.
